February 21, 2007 10:05 AM- winter blows

If it weren't a sunny day today with the temperatures on the (oh so slow) incline, I wouldn't be able to post the photo above which was taken on Sunday.

When people ask how I cope with Winter I say, same as I do with anything that I am powerless to change: denial.

Of course, that is a bit tough around here to maintain as people ALWAYS want to talk about the weather-- and what's worse, most of them LOVE it in the winter time. Gah. Skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, skaters, they all love this season. Which, you know, good for them-- but right about now I start questioning all the strange choices that led me to live here instead of, I don't know-- on a beach in Brazil.

I can't complain. Truly. I simply cannot complain since my comfort levels are so high and I was only reading yesterday* how an ancestor of mine died of typhoid fever in Cambridge, MA at the tender age of 14 and four months on January 10, 1857. (Okay, if she died, I guess she's not so much an ancestor as a dead cousin-- but you follow me here, non?)

(Rest in Peace, little dead bird)

What I mostly do is think about how I really am not a New Englander, but the longer I live here probably the harder it will be for me to move to a beach in Brazil. Or Figi, or New Zealand-- I'm not picky.

And, because I have weathered this 'against the wall sick of winter' moment many times before, I'll just suck it up and remember how much I love the green of Spring.

*At Maud the other day I linked to this ancestry site and dug around on a couple of names. It resulted in some surprising info-- I found my grandmother who we believed to be an only child had two sisters! One died at birth, the other was 16 at the last census taking and then . . . we don't know what.

got 2 cents?

We're finally getting some real winter here: snow, blowing, icy conditions. Had to cancel the first kid-free night AND choir tonight as driving in it wasn't really an option. I have to say that the "poor little dead bird" photo coming as it did right after your comment about the non-ancestor cousin bit made me laugh. My children are out in the blizzard right now, having a snowball fight, by the way. I'm leaning toward the beach in Brazil myself. :/

how anyone...anyone can love winter is beyond me. Although it is a balmy 40 degrees here today, the sun is shinning and the snow has now turned into root beer slushy...umm. what's not to love. 'll take Brazil, Fiji, or New Zealand any day...just say the word ...a girl can dream, can't she? beautiful tree shot! rip little birdie.

L'hiver, c'est pas mal. C'est une saison differente ou on reste devant le feu avec un bon livre. Toutes les saisons ont leur propre beaute.

The photos are beautiful, but I don't miss winter one bit. It's going to be difficult for me to ever move from Florida.

bah! winter! my latest strategy is move to Phoenix...granted, the air is much cleaner here in VT than Phoenix, but the thought of wearing only one layer of clothing instead of three with hat, inside and five outside is enough to get me packing...

Can I say how much I love the winter? Even the falling down on the ice part, even though it scares me? I'm not crazy about the sand and the salt, and the ice is hard to move around on, but I love how the air feels so crisp and READY. Summer air always seems a bit lazy and full of the past. Winter air always feels so expectant to me.
