March 14, 2007 6:41 AM- what's wrong with this picture?

As a general rule of thumb, when I see sap buckets on the side of maple trees my spirits lift. Not only does this indicate a season shift and another step closer to Spring, it means fresh maple syrup which is, in my mind, a great and magical treat.

Something is quite amiss, therefore, when I look at an aged tree with buckets strapped to either side and think, "that poor tree, all the sweetness being unceremoniously sucked out of her."

Or, "how cruel, to just shove hoses up her veins as if she has no feelings AT ALL."

These are signs, clearly, that my mind is going a little bit soft--that the edges of my rational thought are frayed like the hem of a hippie's bell-bottom jeans that have been dragged across the desert, step by step on the way home from Burning Man.

There is only one thing I can do when I unravel to this point and that is take a holiday. I am taking some time from here as well as from work (next week) and going to try and stitch my scattered brain cells back together-- that or plump them up by soaking them in a deep, down pillow.

I'll be back after April 1st. It'd be great to see you all back here, too-- but I know how vast the blogsphere has grown and will understand completely if you move on to richer pastures--- or, if you're really smart, to the thumping beat of urban life.

A la prochaine!

got 2 cents?

Have a lovely blog and real rest - I've been reading more than posting lately too but did it on the sneak. Would never be so fickle as to forget about you! As long as you come back with buckets full of energy, maybe a few photos of Daisy/lakes not that I'm requesting you understand....Happy recharging xx

i worry that we think of the earth as a dead thing...of her life in dead ways... our western culture tends to regard everything as a resource or commodity. how differently would we treat life on this planet if we understood that it IS life...and life that is equal to ours...

My hubby (an upstate NY native) is a huge fan of 'real' maple syrup. He gets totally crazy that I put sugar on my pancakes instead (Dutch heritage thing) and that our kids do the same. He misses seeing those trees with the buckets attached...
