February 14, 2007 1:53 PM- snow day

Schools are closed. University is closed. All programs for the day have been cancelled.

The snow is still coming down in a strange way. No fluffy swirling flakes here. No, this snow has the energy of a straight-A student who is driven to exceed expectation and this storm is supposed to be a doozy, damnit. Inches must be accumulated, stat. No room for fun, we've got records to break.

In other words-- dullsville, rote-- a most dutiful storm with no originality or spark.

Not that I'm complaining. It feels like a heavenly gift from above to have the whole world come to a soft halt for an extended pause. The timing could not have been more sweet as I was on the brink of a serious burn-out and I need some nature induced downtime.

I wanted to capture the birds at the feeders because if I told you there are hundreds of birds each morning of late, you would surely think I was exaggerating. And, though I am prone to exaggeration, in this case it is a fact. Oh, okay, maybe like more than a hundred-- but it is a lot!

Of course I knew the second I opened the kitchen window onto the back of the garage where T has hung the feeders under the eaves (he doesn't want the birds to be rained or snowed on as they eat-- such a mensch) they would all spin off in a mass exodus of flapping wings.

But a few hung on and I snapped some shots.

FACT: those two cylindrical feeders were FULL this morning. FULL.

Goldfinches love their thistle.

Almost as much as a certain little lady loves the snow. LOVES the snow. T just left on a hike up the mountain and wanted to bring her with him and Ollie because she is just hilarious in the snow-- body surfing through the dunes. It's a riot to watch her. However, she wouldn't stay clear of his snowshoes so he had to bring her back in and this is her look of total disappointment* as the warmth of the woodstove quickly melts the snow from her face.

Why is Henry not on the walk? You mean wounded boy? Yes AGAIN, grrrr--- long story. He's okay. Just not up for any walks right now.

And that's all I've got-- happily buried away under a white out.

*Okay, disappointment may be understating it a wee bit. She is outraged. That fierce, angry emotion like when you were five and your dad gave the money to buy YOUR new shorts to your sister because she was eleven so you had to run off into the streets of Philadelphia to express your fury at being treated like a baby! Which ruined the shopping trip for everyone as they had to spend hours looking for the lost kid.

(Damn, I hope they broke the mold after me and none of you parents out there are dealing with brats like that).

And, yeah, so I'm a bit anthropomorphic today, what of it? I think that's exactly the kind of outrage she feels. And if I could let her buy her own shorts, I would.

got 2 cents?

Aren't snow days just the best? Unfortunately I'm as pissed as Daisy, because we apparently didn't get enough snow to cancel classes at the University. Not that they ever cancel classes anyways.

it was a lovely breezy 74 or so today here. which is nice for the moment, but only means this summer is going to be a bitch. my philosophy is definitely to enjoy what you've got, cause tomorrow could be worse.

So that's where they all went! For some reason this year there are way less birds at the feeders at the cottage - obviously they all went to New Hampshire to spend the winter with BP

You'll go broke fast trying to keep birds in niger in the winter. Voice of experience over here. D Dog is so flippin' cute - I think you need to start an 'Oliver' like daily picture so we can all get our fix.

Oh thank you for the pictures of the birds! I'm so glad not all birds migrate. There's some fat little local around here that has just stunning markings--I don't know what kind of breed it is but it's all speckledy and makes my heart lift whenever I see one. Listen, I'm sure you have experience with this living in the hinterlands as you do--what's the best method for getting skunk off your coat?

I really should hate you for having such an adorable house. I would if I could, but alas, I can not. There was a point in time that I loved snow days. That day is buried under the 6' pile of snow in my front yard, which has been there since December 20.

I haven't seen snow like that in years!!! I am in Louisiana now (where there is no seasons!!!) but once upon a time I was in South Carolina and we got the tail end of some snow in the winter. I loved it!!!
