January 29, 2006 10:55 AM- reading deprivation

I forgot about this.

It probably wasn't a big deal in 1993 since there was no blogging then and a week without reading meant no newspapers, books, magazines, etc--- not such a big deal for me.

But now?! Doing the Artist's Way and this week is NO READING. Gah. Talk about bringing the bright lights of the examination table onto my daily rhythms. I read blogs, alot. Often. They have become my source of connection and inspiration.

As you all know, there are so many well-written blogs out there where people serve up the flotsam jetsam of their lives with such originality and exquisite attention to detail, that it's better than the overly edited, heavily manufactured, narrowly squeezed content of most magazines, newspapers etc.

All of which is to say, I'm in SERIOUS WITHDRAWL, people. It's almost comical the bartering going on in my head. But I am committed to this process and I am going to go through with this. NO READING this week, including blogs.

Pass the methadone.

Oddly enough or interestingly enough or no shit sherlock enough--- this morning has already been different for me. In the time I would've normally grabbed a coffee and planted myself in front of the computer, instead I have had peppermint tea, written my morning pages, taken the dogs for a long walk, and decoupaged a blank book to begin a daily gratitude journal that I will keep at my bedside.

So yeah-- I'm getting the point. If you take away the distractions, the excuses of 'there just isn't time' slam flat to the ground like plywood store-fronts.

I will miss you all--- I'll be back in your neighborhoods next week.

A bientot, baby.

got 2 cents?

I can't believe someone would torture you like that. I have heard of this book. Why do people like it so much if it forces you not to read? I would go insane.

Hmm... Very interesting. I'd love to hear what the idea is behind the no-reading sentence. Because if it's something about clearing your mind and ridding yourself of unwanted creative influences, there must be a better way of going about it... (I HAVE stopped watching the news and I limit myself to 10 newspaper articles a day; that's for optimism purposes.)

Ditto what violet said. Nope! Ain't doin' it. Reading reduction, yes ... assessing what I read and eliminating the 'junk,' but total reading deprivation, no way ... it'll just mean twice as much reading next week, and more stress. But I wish all the best to those who are doing it.

Isn't it interesting how shifting our routines now and then really shakes things up and invites us to explore new worlds. Enjoy your time off!
