November 24, 2008 4:28 PM- lumps and light

Too often I stumble* around my house and all I notice is the dog hair (clumps, wafts, drifts), dishes in the sink (honestly, how do all those dishes get into the sink?), refrigerator shelves that need to be washed, windows that need to be cleaned, house projects living a suspension of disbelief.

(Do note that I rarely notice laundry. Seriously, laundry falls far to the bottom of my mental to-do list. Good thing we've got those indentured fairies living underneath our basement-- must be them keeping me in clean jeans, non?)

But then, every once in a while I come down the stairs and think, oh that's pretty. This occurs in direct proportion to the amount of sunlight pouring through the windows. For instance, right now as it is going on dark blue o'clock, I'm not so much with the pretty and am much more with fuck it's dark out. Bitch.

However, this morning it was all sugar and sunlight and I was inspired to grab my camera and take a few shots. It was all prompted by these silly flowers. As you can see, they are not real; they are made of felt. Yet, as I glanced up from my coffee, damn if they weren't leaning into the sun.

Then, once I snapped those, I wandered into the living room and snapped this lovely pillow that gives me so much pleasure.

I truly love this pillow. Silly, how that can be.

Wherefore did you come by that pillow, you might ask. (If you were a pretentious dube and/or partial to Elizabethan English, obvs). And I would smile and tell you how I nicked it from a friend. Yes indeed-- reason #842 you don't want me over for tea-- I'll likely swipe your pillow and take it home with me. Lisa made this pillow and was intending to sell it at her antiques shop, but I grabbed it and threw some dollars at her and that was that.

So then, before shutting off the camera, I took a last glance around to see if there were any other spots of illumination for me to capture when I saw how the light was coming through the crystal we have hanging above our front door.**

Not such a great shot, but it provides an opportunity to show yet another pillow from another talented seamstress that graces our home. See that sweet white square with the blue edging? That's the one. I won it by answering a quiz Cat was having-- my answer was "sewing machine" which I don't think was the correct answer but it was close enough that I won-- so here's my advice, whenever there is a question contest, answer "sewing machine"-- chances are you'll win!

And now, because I know there are those of you eager to see what a lake looks like as it begins to harden with ice, I leave you with this-- taken this morning. Sigh, winter is arriving. I won't lie, I'm not happy about this and I think Summer was a total slack ass wench!

*Are you wondering if "stumble" is the correct verb? Oh yes. Allow me to show you the bruises on my ankles, on my hip, on my shoulder and, . . . wait for it, on my freaking forehead! I actually slammed into the door jamb a few nights back and went to bed with a cube of ice forming a darling arch over the pulsing egg above my right eyebrow.

**Are you wondering why we have a crystal hanging above our front entry? That would be feng shui, bien entendu . . .

got 2 cents?

BP truly: Parallel lives. Also your house looks so pretty the next time you look at that seat with the cushion on it, I'll be on it too disguised as a cushion...

I love the extremes of daylight - morning and evening are the best. The rest of the day is nice too, but it just doesn't seem as rich. Must be the angles. As for the dusting, it's a never ending battle in my house too. I swear I could Pledge every surface only to have the house be the same the very next day. Maybe we should think of it as "fairy dust" from now on!

I do the stumble thing a lot. I'm always covered in bruises that I have no idea where they're from. And the grammar in that sentence sucks but I'm too lazy to fix it.

You should have taken a picture of yourself because you TOO are a beautiful source of light, my dear. Now I'm going to hide all my pillows...

In my home the lack of light is prevalent. I am completely immersed in the dark and it doesn?t improve as the day progresses. As a result I am obsessed with lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting and lamps here, there and everywhere. Now I?m stuck with trying to hide all the cords! At some point in the morning I have to turn the lights off in an attempt at conservation and it leaves me feeling like a mushroom. Thanks for validating my not so perfect housekeeping by sharing your woes and your beautiful, joyous home.
