Crankitude be gone! And so it was.

Last February, my brother-in-law quit his corporate law gig, ditched his suit and tie and hit the Appalachian Trail. (yes, I know-- a man after my own heart although I feel pretty certain that phrase is not meant to be used to describe the brother of my husband). He began the 2160 mile stroll in Georgia and reached New England a couple weeks ago.

He arrived here on Monday, his face beaming with happiness-- or at least what we could see of it, obscured as it is with a beard worthy of Hagrid.

We ponied up to three barstools at our local pub last night and listened to his wild tales from the trail. (NOTE: All you storytellers out there looking for character inspiration, here's a tip-- go hike the AT-- man, there are some seriously one-of-a-kind types out there mixing it up.)

Anyway, my point being, it was fun. All the dark brew of yesterday morning is long gone. Not only did we have a great time last night-- that afternoon I got an email of congratulations that the grant I had applied for had come through in the full amount. That felt really good. Given how the grant writing last Spring was the nail in the coffin for me on this job-- it's what put that last layer of crisp on my toasty fried self-- and given how crappy I feel about "quitting"-- I hate that word, but it does apply-- it felt really good to know I took an almost, guaranteed failure of a grant app and turned it around. Blessed be.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that today--after her bath-- Daisy is a most sweet-smelling, lovable girl and that she and I took a walk, just the two of us, this morning down sun-dappled paths as the weather is simply gorgeous-- high pressure, cool breeze, lots of sun.

I do have work that must get completed by the end of the month, but I'm feeling better, day by day. Better and better.

I hope you are, too.

got 2 cents?

Sometimes surrounding yourself with people who've had the courage to jump into the extraordinary is the best mood elevator possible. Glad to hear that things are better and Daisy's lost her stink.

HEY! My brother just got home from the AP too!!! He had some knee issues and a few weeks off the trail at the start but he did "most" of it. He probably would have finished but his girlfriend is in need of hernia surgery so he wants to be home for her. I think he was within 600 miles of finishing. I've got a link to his trail journal on my blog. What was your brother's trail name? My brother is Aaron and his trail name is Firebird. Molly

I know it's been forever and two days since I've been over her poking at you, but I'm happy to see you are doing well and at least seem satisfied with life. I have to ask, because I loved their adventures so, what has happened with the two boy-dogs who would go off into the wilds for days on end? And who is this Daisy? A new addition?

So glad you're feeling better. I've always wanted to hike the AT, but I'm not sure I'm up to all that camping and stuff. Have you read Bill Bryson's book on the AT, "A Walk in the Woods". It's hilarious.

You got the grant? WOO-HOO for you! You rock, BP - I really think there should be a hall of fame for successful grant writers - you, of course, would have place of honor. Go You! Hope Daisy stays smelling fresh as - well, as a daisy :)

You made the heart of this novelist pound fast with your mention of the STORIES available for free on the AT. Congrats on your grant and all the joy in your life!

So good to hear that the dark storm clouds are sliding away. And even better - that what you worked SO HARD on came to fruition. You should shove any shriveled up crumbs of guilt away, knowing that you did a damn fine job and you're leaving this place with funding, etc. Wishing you many more sweet summer days -
