September 22, 2006 4:18 PM- high-strung and happily delirious

A few weeks back, I read a review at Bookslut and impulsively went to amazon and ordered the featured novel.

Yesterday, it arrived.

There's about a 10 minute pause above this sentence that you can't see because I truly just sat here and tried to think of ways to convey the intensity of my excitement about this book.

Much like the purported "life flashing before your eyes" moment, images of the day I was reading A Wrinkle in Time and my mother kept calling me to dinner and I kept shouting back with increasing desperation, "I can't, I can't come" burst in from nowhere. Gah. There are another hundred old images stacking up above my head like so many planes circling O'Hare airport and waiting for their signal to land.

I can't go into them all. Besides, my forehead is already fevered and trying to share those with you might really push me over the edge and force me to go take a nap.

But I can't nap. I am consumed with this book. CONSUMED. And then, just a few minutes ago-- I returned to Bookslut and saw she had linked to an interview with Scarlett Thomas and the interview linked to her website, where I scarfed as much as I could before I fell off the edge and died.

All of which is to say, this weekend I was supposed to be in Boston but I cancelled and now I am here and have a whole fat, beautiful unscheduled weekend to sit on the couch and drop down the wildly magic, created just for me rabbit hole of the book that is The End of Mr. Y.

got 2 cents?

Wow! What a review! I love the way you phrase things -- "scarfed as much as I could before I fell off the edge and died" HA! I both love and hate it when a book consumes me like that, but mostly love it. Hate it, because when I am trying to work on my OWN writing, the other book will loom in my head and sometimes make my own characters sort of drift away to play hopscotch in some back alley, so that I have to just go and read!

Love to hear about the books you read, and kudos for mentioning L'Engle - she is still one of my favorites. If I ever pick that book up, or its sequel, I will still be late to the supper table. That, or any collection of stories by Poe.

I love the books that really invade your life, and you think, how did I live without this book? How will my life be different? I really must check this one out... I remember reading A Wrinkle in Time in a plane going over the Atlantic -so thankfully, there was plenty of time for reading.

Oh and you and my husband are nerds. You both read A Wrinkle in Time as a child and loved it. He read it to me a few years ago and I just didn't get it - I'm not a sci-fi/fantasy girl I guess. ;)

I just had to read Mr. Y since you said it gave you a similar experience as A Wrinkle in Time... My whole life seemed to stop around me while I read that as a kid. Just finished Mr. Y... really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation! Read anything else by Ms. Thomas? I can't tell about them from amazon...
