September 12, 2006 8:46 AM- the unevolved species

Yes, the sky is robin's egg blue, the lakes are blanketed with white clouds with only mountain tops poking through and the sunlight is blazing. It is another glorious day here at Soliden.

However, I can't shake the recurring question that is buzzing on my ears of late: why can't human beings fucking evolve?

The only way I deal with the madness of Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, and Rumsfeld (who should all be put on trial for war crimes and ideally the tribunal would be held in the middle east) is to remember that we have centuries of power-crazed insanity to look back on-- choose your century. But then, I watch a documentary that eloquently clarifies how utterly insane it all is and I collapse into rage and hopelessness.

Why We Fight

This morning, I was surfing and linked from lindsay's site to this:

jesus camp

Lindsay has the YouTube link to the trailer so go there to get a taste if you dare--but I warn you, T got so upset just watching the trailer that he had to leave the room.

Sorry not to be brightening your day here. I know I'll compartmentalize all this soon and be back to my focus on the beauty that surrounds me because either that or I kill myself. Truly. The fact that we cannot stop these sick, sick people just leaves me reeling.

But I have no intention of killing myself. I've long since adjusted. And in a few minutes-- I'll go take a long walk and immerse in this reality of golden fields, green woods and blue mountains. And I'll do what I can for the people around me here to enjoy this day.

got 2 cents?

Sick sick people abound. All we can do is try to spread tolerance and understanding... not that I'm very optimistic at this point.

I watched the trailer to Jesus Camp a couple of weeks ago and I can't stop thinking about it. So disturbing - the Blair Witch project has nothing on the horror that is Jesus Camp.

Wow. I gotta tell you - I used to be a part of that crazy world (when I was 18 I "got saved" into a Pentecostal church). I have to just shake my head at it now - and that movie showed how kids are being brainwashed into thinking that God=Army. Sick and sad.

hmmm... I found Why We Fight utterly disturbing and now I'm afraid to click on the link to Jesus Camp. Maybe it's better that i don't? I dunno. I tend to saturate myself in all of this and wind up feeling so flat, exhausted, gloomy and impotent (once the outrage wears off). I think perhaps for now I will concentrate of your place in the sun, robin's egg blue skies and toadstools springing up out of nowhere. Suggestion to lift your mood: Go see Little Miss Sunshine. You'll LOVE it and maybe it will restore your faith in humanity a little bit.

Not even tempted to click. Focusing on that blue outside my window instead and the roses in my children's cheeks after their day at the zoo.

and people wonder why i?m ambivalent about procreating. such things drive me to madness if considered too long. so i just try to keep my eyes focused on lovelier things and hope one day an army of bloggers can right all the wrongs.

Last night I watched a great 9/11 documentary on the National Geographic Channel - very well done, but at the end I couldn't help but wonder if we've given the terrorists everything they've ever wanted - a big, fat, bloody fight. Lots of innocent people dead. And I agree with Wee - go, right now, and see Little Miss Sunshine. It will restore your faith, make you laugh and cry and dance, I guarantee it.

Sad. manipulated like Hitler youth. I'll see "Why We Fight," but not "Jesus Camp," it just hits too close to home. I can't even join in "Onward Christian Soldiers" on the rare occasion it's sung in church. Uh, excuse me, I ain't nobody's soldier, and I think that's just the way God wants it, thanks.

The most atrocious, atrocious acts in human history have been committed in the name of "god." On all sides of the fence... Christian, Muslim, Judaism, you name it. And yet so much of the beauty of the human experience (great architecture, golden rules, community) also stems from organized religion. It's so hard to know how to take it. A force of good? A force of evil? Or a force to be taken with a gigantic grain of salt?

1. I haven't watched Jesus Camp yet but am now very interested to find it and do so. 2. I am a "pentacostal Christian" well and truly "saved" (hapily so) and can proudly say I am not insane/intollerant/wielding an iron-clad bible to beat those who should dare disagree with me into submission. 3. It's my observation that there are evil/deluded/wicked/whatever people in ALL walks of life, not just the church. 4. My Church is an amazing place full of people comitted to enriching and improving the lives of people in our community less fortunate than us (with absolutely no strings attached) 5. Most churches i know are doing the same 6. It's kind of sad when all of us are tarred with the same brush..

I'm glad you included Wolfowitz in that list. In my mind, he's the most frightening one of all. I think he's actually the one pulling Rumsfeld's puppet strings. Nuff said.

This comment has nothing to do with your post I'm afraid. But I wanted to tell you that I just finished Eat, Pray, Love and I am in love with the book. I didn't want it to end and I had the same reaction you did...i immediately started it again. And I gave the book the biggest hug! Thanks for the recommendation. To everybody else I pass on my recommendation as well. Jane
