November 08, 2004 8:10 PM- mon petit biblio

This past weekend, we had a number of people make the long trek up from civilization (i.e. Boston) to join us in our wilderness festivities. Ta was one of those intrepid souls and she brought with her bounty from the ever overflowing tables of the NPR studio.

I believe I have made mention of how wretched a reader I am. It is the sad truth. But my lovely friend never loses faith and continues to ply me with books. I did try to plow through the Borgia one but it was the dullest read-- really terrible. The worst kind of histroical fiction. That did not stop me from enjoying all the references to the orgies and wild sexual practices going on in Italy in the mid 1400s. Au contraire. And, I must admit, reacquainting myself with the utter corruption of the popes and cardinals et al of that era could not have been more timely as we find ourselves at the mercy of a "Christian" coalition. It's a tiresome loop this human progression . . .

Haven't gotten into the Stevenson novel, yet. If it's any good I'll let you know.

Ta and I did have a great deal of fun reading passages of "Eight Days in Provence, a moment of sensualite" aloud as we polished off a bottle of red wine. Allow me to share a few of the gems:

. . .He could have torn off my clothes and we could have made mad passionate love, as they say. . . ."No," he said, "not now, not yet. . .we can't . . .not until we can't stand it any longer."

. . .I felt it was my job to provide the entertainment. "Well, I had an exciting afternoon, I announced as I sat down. . . I went to the market."

. . . Pushing him back on the pillows I whispered, "Now you can look at the cherubs." My hands on his chest were all that grounded me as I floated off into the fresco sky.

This is a published book. I kid you not.

Tara headed home Sunday night and she doesn't know I put aside her adult reading for some recent acquisitions of my own.

I got these off of ebay after I wrote this post and got the ashes of my childhood all stirred up.

I just love them so. Below is Dorrie and Gink.

And the illustrations in this edition of Little Witch aren't so great, but still I love my brave Minikin . . .

got 2 cents?

I prefer your book! I've read a lot of books about Provence and been there several times, but nothing like that has ever occurred. ( all of Peter Mayle's books are more my speed!)

God, how I hated fiction as a child...and quite honestly, hated to read, period. Look what I was missing?! Someone once told me this is a Capricorn trait (not that I put much stock in astrology): That we're 'old' as children and grow younger as we age. If that's true, then my Capricorn self must be about 10 about now. With that in mind, I must search out these books... :)

can I look at your cherubs? I promise not to touch. heeee. I actually really love the blue witch illos... loose and spontaneous. Never read the book though...must add to list. I must confess, I'm starting to feel illiterate. and that's not a good feeling.

I'm always so happy when someone ELSE says, 'I tried to plow through this book...' because it makes me feel a tiny bit less inadequate. Some books I can't handle emotionally and then some are just outright boring! So there! Take that, boring and rotten books! And yes, the illustrations are wonderful, but is anyone else drooling over the font/typesetting? That is what I love. And that is so weird. So... is that book 'The Little Witch' what the movie was based on? I really loved that movie as a kid, and yes, I know it was WAY cheesy. But it was what inspired my idea for a 'funky witch' Halloween costume, which was an animal print pointed hat and matching dress.

I really love to read historical fiction and there are some great writers out there. Too bad the writer of the Lucrezia Borgia novel couldn't keep your interest. On the other hand, I missed out on most juvenile literature, since my mom didn't read to us and we had almost no books outside of school books. My childhood memories are filled with Jean, John, Judy, Puff, and Spot.

*gasp* I remember both of those witch books. I was obsessed with them at about age 7 or 8. I was thinking about them both again recently (because, well, Halloween) and could not remember either title. How sad is that, that I couldn't remember such simple titles. Thank you for posting about them!

Are you, perchance, obsessed with witches? I only ask because The Missus is thusly entranced by the pointy-hatted ones, and I detected a similar excited note in your tone when you were writing about your witchy books. Being a witch would be so cool. I'd turn all my bits of paperwork into tiny dancing voles.
