November 07, 2004 9:45 AM- jubilation

My hair smells like woodsmoke.

Which is to say, YES---- Thursday night we got our ticket to ride and were granted a building permit and that Simon and Garfunkel song kept looping through my head all day on Friday . . ."Ju-bee-lay-shon! She loves me again . ." Jubilation. After two years of concern, we have been welcomed into the tiny hamlet of our small town and are on the other side of the gauntlet. And can I tell you? As much as I did not enjoy going through the gauntlet of selectmen, planning board, zoning, etc-- I am so glad it is there and that is WHY I wanted to live in this town. I've lived through such horrors of what happens to beautiful places when people come in and build whatever they want cause they can dazzle the town with big bucks and that is so not going to happen here. At least not for now.

So we went forward with our plans for a bonfire Saturday night. (Our rotten British pals couldn't wait a day and had their Guy Fawkes effigy burning Friday night--- the wankers-- so we had no effigies to burn, but there was fire and food and drinks and it was good).

Since it snowed Thursday and Friday nights, we were concerned that the weather was going to ruin everything. But no, it was clear (as clear as you can hope for from November in these parts) and calm.

And people started to arrive.

It blew me away how many people braved the elements and found their way into the woods-- we had over 40 people plus lots of kids and half of them arrived in the dark which again blows my mind. But whatever, I think people love fire.

And of course, the kids did the marshmallow thing though I doubt you can even see it in this picture. As I looked at the pics this morning it became clear to me that if you want photographic evidence of a rocking party out in the woods-- do not entrust someone who is half in the bag and partying wildly or you will end up with nada.

Oh well--- gotta shower and head back up there to clean the mess up-- unless of course the bears have beat us to it.

got 2 cents?

Ooooh, fire!! I miss fires. The last one we sat around was during our last camping trip in the States. (Outdoor fires in the tropics?....mmmm, not so much...) Looks like a wonderful time was had by all. What a great way to celebrate your good news! Congratulations!!

I am so impressed with your photos and delighted for you. I agree that it is worth the wait to know that you are preserving the natural beauty. Fire is so seductive and hypnotic, isn't it?

Don't you love using the word 'wanker'? So much fun. And hooray for your 'we are definitely building a house' bash - and even more hooray for the bloggers bash, where we will dance and sing and make rum smores!

If you go out in the woods today You're sure of a big surprise If you go out in the woods today You'd better go in disguise For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain, because Today's the day the bloggers have their mad alcoholic pyromania party. Apparently. Looks like you had a very cool time. I like bonfires. I wasn't allowed to have one this year, because of what happened to the nice library last time. Also, can someone tell me what "smores" are? They sound dangerous, and possibly infectious.

ohhh pastamasta, you are so clearly not American as this is a decidedly American campfire treat: toast a marshmallow over an open flame, then squish it onto a graham cracker then top it with a bar of chocolate and sandwich the top with another graham cracker---- that is a s'more. They are not infectious but are addictive.
