November 04, 2004 8:48 AM- ~ Soliden ~

A while back, I asked for some help to replace "the 82" with a real name. T and I had not come up with anything and it seemed we never would. I have to admit, I felt really silly asking but I shouldn't have because OH, how the Internet delivered.

My darlingest Croila sent me the most fabulous link to pages and pages of Scottish words that could be linked together into names-- I loved it and came up with some real winners. Unfortunately, T felt that as we had no idea how to pronounce them, it would seem awkward-- especially for friends and neighbors, etc.

Now, as y'all know-- I grew up outside Philadelphia where there is no shortage of celtic names such as Bryn Mawr, Bala Cynwwd, Gladwyne-- to mention a few. So I was FINE with the challenge. But, this is a shared place and even though I probably could have forced one of them across the finish line, we had to have something we both felt comfortable with. It is our place, after all, and I do try to leave my bossiness at the office (some times more successfully than others).

So, lovely Lizardek's suggestion came into play: Soliden, which means "place in the sun" in Swedish. We both liked it alot for a number of reasons. First, even though we probably don't pronounce it correctly the way Swedes do, it's okay since Americans mangle everything. Second, it is easy to spell and won't be hard for friends and neighbors to mangle. Third, our home is going to be entirely solar-powered and faces south so we loved the meaning of the word.

And so it is. Soliden.

Tonight we have to head to the planning board for building approval. I am hoping it goes smoothly but you never know. Right now I am in a "it will be what it will be mode". I'm tired of fighting agains the tide-- I want to flow and ride with the energies that be.

But if they give us a green light tonight? Then we can break ground next week and will I have photos for you!

And then, once we're moved in . . . how about a blogger's bash?

got 2 cents?

O, that is lovely! Bravo Lizarek! And I so hope it will be, truly, your place in the sun because you deserve it. I'm going to need a map and an address so to take refuge from the cold and bitter winds.

If my danish pronunciation of soliden is anything like a swedish pronunciation, then it is indeed a very pretty name! Congrats, and hopefully your meeting goes well! (I do know that the "sol" portion is pronounced much like sole if that helps you any)

I love it! Love it! I also like how it has 'solid' in it, like, 'this is the place that is solid for us.' Hooray for the blogosphere!and especially for the Lovely Lizardek. And YES. Crossing both fingers and sending up prayers that all goes well with the permits. Then we can PARTY.

That picture is just beautiful- it looks like a magic little piece of earth... The name is great too! Naming things can be so difficult. I can't imagine trying to name a kid. We had a hard enough time naming our fish. :)

I am late coming to this entry, having just learned of Soliden today while looking at your archives. Even if it were not a Swedish name, it could easily be the combination of solitude and den, a lovely thought.
