On the morning of the holiday she shines,
beautiful in the pink light, the day breaking around her,
dogs darting about at her ankles, sniffing,
the little one nipping at her big brother's bright orange collars.
She doesn't know that I watch her from the window,
as she disappears into the trees at the edge of the field.
She doesn't know that without her
I too would disappear,
swallowed by the forest, no reason to return.
She could do nothing but take this walk,
and I would still be saved,
pulled from the edge of the abyss
by the purity of her attention, the grace
of her forgiveness, washing over me,
warm and light;
so thoughtfully reasoned,
even I am convinced of my own innocence.
