March 29, 2005 7:37 AM- can dogs inherit stupidity from owners?

My dogs are from whack-city. They are so weird. (Exhibit A: pictured above Henry has Ollie's entire head in his mouth). But is it a case of nature versus nurture? For example, we think Ollie is either part cat (or half chihuahua) and part wolf because he prefers not to go outside EXCEPT when he and Henry run off for nine hours at a go in deep freezing snow or, like yesterday, in a miserable ice storm.

As for Henry, not only does he believe he is human, he believes he is of royalty born and is shocked, SHOCKED, I say, when he has to share the sofa with me.

Witness his lovely, perfect, unblemished nose here. Note the delicate features and fine appreciation of the flower's light fragrance. Too bad I don't have a photo from last night when they came to the door drenched and mewling, with a snout full of white porcupine quills EACH. Grrrr.

I had just come home from yoga-- it was late-- I wanted to eat dinner-- but they were in a bad way. We called our angel of a vet who agreed they needed to come in for an emergency visit-- got back in the car with the eerily silent pups--and drove another half hour (love country living) to the doctor's office and left my bedraggled, miserable, but ever sweet and lovable mutts with our beloved Dr. J.

T will pick them up this morning. Honestly, how can they be so smart one minute and so stupid the next? Maybe they are human . . .

UPDATE: T called from the road after retrieving our retrievers to tell me that Dr. J said he'd "never seen quills in the tail before." That's right, Ollie's tail was full of quills as well. So, not only did they each put their mouths on the porcupine, Ollie obviously sat on him, too. I repeat. Weird. Ass. Dogs.

got 2 cents?

Ouch! Poor pups. From exhibit A, I'd say Henry is part circus lion.

MWRAAWWW!!! LOVE THE DOGGIES!! Clearly Henry is a refined gentleman-dog, stopping to smell the flowers. Poor guy, getting snout full of porcupine. Here in Brooklyn I worry more that our dog will find a used syringe than a porcupine quill! Your pups are adorable.

Personally, I think you need to ditch the job, buy a super tacky gypsy caravan and tour the country with your mutts who are obviously the Penn and Teller of the canine set. Up there? Ollie and Henry practice their loin taming act. Then Henry poses for Glam Head shot to be set to talent agency. And fianlly, they engage in their ritual prayer session before attempting wild trapeze act featuring quill shooting porcupines, canons and production values worthy of Cirque de Soliel. Also: am thinking you should change their names to Bedlam and Buttescotch. xoxoxoxo smooches on their poor poked-too-much poochie noses

*hugs to Ollie and Henry from the pooches at my house* Country living definitely has its drawbacks, but I wouldn't trade it for love nor money (depending how much money, of course).

Oh, the poor poor puppies. Hopefully next time they won't be so quick to investigate a porcupine! But those pictures just make them look so adorable, and I just love the head-in-mouth shot! As for what wee said: their should they perfect their loin-taming act, or was that a typo? *laugh*

Fergus totally resents that chihuahua remark as he has chased more than his fair share of wildlife! That said, he also sleeps 23 hours out of the day and looks at me like I've gone off the deep end when I force his tiny fluff butt into the snowy outdoors. We both send love to your boys!

AGAIN with the porcupine quills? Poor little fellas -- I know one probably shouldn't reward that sort of behavior, but their stoicism during the drive to the vet's certainly merits a treat or two, don't you think?

you have PORCUPINES where you live??? I've never seen one here. Your dogs are adorable, and at least when they run away they come home on their own!! Lucky for you you have a great vet, too. I haven't found a good one since I moved.

those butterscotch boys have got to QUIT IT with the porcupines! They may have to attend Porcupines Anonymous - "hi everyone, I'm Ollie, not only do I try to eat porcupines, I sit on them, too." Velcro sends his best regards, of course. He recommends escapades with cow poop, it's much easier on the snout. (But not on his mother's!)

Those poor dogs. Your vet does sound like an angel.. but he probably knew the dogs were in a real bad way.

wow. they definitely seem to have firmly defined personalities, each of them. i wonder if he did what i see my dogs doing when they're play-fighting - they swing their butts at each other and use them as battering rams. hmmm...

I hope you know when I have dogs someday they have to live up to the Butterscotch Boy standards. If my dog isn't whacked, I'll be entirely disappointed.

i swear you could land a small cessna on Henry's nose. that dog is primed for that "resting a treat on his nose- snapping it up" trick. really you could rest a banana on that schnozz. lengthwise. you could probably get most of a meatloaf on it. you could amuse houseguests for hours with wedges of watermelon. i'm sure he scared the hell out of some poor porcupine, waving that thing around.
