November 25, 2005 8:24 AM- Obama for President
It would be a simple thing to paste up a few snapshots from yesterday. The day began in a swirl of wintery white, but when it all settled out midday, barely 3 inches had landed.
The thing is, despite being burrowed away in my silvery Xanadu, I am still entangled with the hurlyburly of the great human experiment and will shout from the mountain tops that I am afire with rekindled love for Mr. Barack Obama.
For those of you who did not see him on Jon Stewart, you have my condolences. He was, in a word, magnificent. Superb. Breathtaking. Dazzling. Brilliant. Stunning. Impossibly articulate. Deftly funny.
Okay. That's ten words. But I see politicians on Jon Stewart all the time and they can never find their footing. Either they try to be funny and tank. Or, they are so intimidated by Jon that they tank. Or, they hold onto some pole-up-their-ass uptightness in an effort to distance themselves from this silly comedy show and remind everyone they are big boys and in doing so they, er, tank.
Barack blows them all away. Blows them away. Like an ostrich coming into the farmyard ready for a footrace with some mindless, blind hens.
He parried with Jon with absolute ease and looseness, his killer smile always in evidence. There wasn't a moment of him trying to be " a serious politican," or fobbing off indirect answers to direct questions, or a whiff of hesitation. Ever. He was F*CKING amazing. He was presidential without trying. He has so much genuine class he didn't have to create any phony storefront. He struck the perfect balance: never inappropriate and never uptight-- I am in awe of his composure, his poise and his extreme intelligence. And then. THEN, he even double-smacked back on Jon to Jon's absolute delight and amazement.
Holy god, he is perfect. A perfect genius. I always found him appealing before, it's not like I didn't know he was smart and cute and disarming. It's just that I hadn't seen him in this milieu before and loved how he shredded the furniture.
It is my new mantra: Obama for President. I chant it throughout the day. There is light. There is hope.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I never watch Jon Stewart - I'm missing out huh? I'm loving that wood burning stove!!! Very European. My good friends in Montenegro have a similar one - and there's nothing like lighting it up, sitting around with friends with a nice bottle of red. Very cozy.

He sure sounds too good to be true. I haven't seen a darn thing about him over here. :( Stupid CNN. It's been snowing all afternoon, but it's barely sticking. We'll see what tomorrow brings. Lovely photos! :)

My own silvery Xanadu is more of a greyish Black Hole of Calcutta, as the pathetic spattering of dribbly sleet we Brits laughingly call "snow" has turned to slush, and is now seeping into our shed and doing highly unauthorised things to our gas supply. Loooovely.

I saw Mr. Hottie McHotterstuff on TDS, too. I laughed. I cried. I wet my pants with glee. P.S. Turkey day was about 60 degrees and sunny at my house. Don't you just hate me?

I saw it...and thought his final line might possibly be the most brilliant (and true!) thing anyone's ever said to Jon. :) The reason Barack gives me hope is that we might finally have hit upon a candidate who can strike that incredibly delicate balance of making people color blind...while still making them aware of rampant racism. And THAT has me excited (for obvious personal reasons).

I didn't see it, crap it all, but when I have seen Obama on other programs, his grace and poise and total non-slickness always impresses me. He was fabulous at the DNC, I do remember that. So yay! Now I'm off to watch the video. And surely we can love Jon and Obama equally, don't you think? And can we just sit here and imagine what it would be like to have well-spoken president, again?

Even though I vote in every election, there are too few times that I am genuinely proud to vote for a candidate. Voting for Obama was one of those times.
