January 20, 2010 5:01 AM- after all
A new day. Monday and Tuesday are behind us now. I know that we all have Haiti uppermost in our minds so it makes any of our inconveniences all the more petty in light of all that those in Haiti are facing as they stuggle to survive hour to hour.
I try to process all that is happening around us. I try to find perspective and the truth is, what is happening in Haiti is overwhelming to me. Not a useful or helpful response, to be sure. I am nobody's emergency room medic (I know this because my sister-in-law is an emergency room doctor who heads up the ER for a large Philadelphia hospital and how she faces, manages and resolves trauma is markedly different than my response-- which is to sit on the curb and cry).
One of my first thoughts when I climbed out of the car yesterday afternoon and was beginning to compute what just happened was-- oh no, the birds. I was on my way to run errands, chief among them to get more birdseed. We are totally out of birdseed and our feeders generally see upwards of 50 birds a day especially at this time of year when there's so little for them to survive on.
I know-- not a big deal in the big scheme of things. Or, I don't know-- is it? Is it okay that I can focus on minutiae but collapse in the face of large-scale disasters? I don't know.
I don't know much, that's for sure.
But it's a new day. And that, is always a blessing.

What's wrong with focusing on the minutiae? Some of those 50 birds would no doubt be dead if you weren't there to care for them. You're doing a good thing. As for Haiti, short of sending donations, what can you do? Go down there and basically just be in the way? Those who can do something are doing it. And you're doing your part by feeding the birds and caring for those you love.

I totally agree with Jazz. What is happening in Haiti makes my stomach and my heart hurt. But, I am not a rescue worker. Donations are all that I can muster, and I guess, prayer. The birds are (in part) who you take care of...and that is important too. Cheers to a new day! And Cheers to these beautiful photographs. That sunrise is a blessing too.

Of course you can focus on those birds...without you they may not find anything to eat. You are helping care for 50+ birds and that is important! What's happening in Haiti is eating at all of us but putting all else aside to just focus on that...well that's just not right either. You are important to those birds...well and to me too! xoxo
