April 30, 2006 11:39 PM- why I live here

T took the photo above (in the new header). He also walked out of the house on Saturday at 1:00 pm saying, "I'm gonna go check out some birds."

When he hadn't reappeared at 5:30, I called him on his cell phone. He had walked up one mountain, across the top of two others and was en route to a major road, but could I just pull up the Topo map to affirm he was on the right trail?

Which is to say his casual stroll out the backdoor was almost 7 miles long.

I drove down and picked him up so he wouldn't have to add another 3 miles to his afternoon jaunt.

It's good to know one of us was busily occupied this weekend because for my part, the chauffering services I offered was pretty much the sole activity of the past two days.

Well, that's not entirely truthful. I was occupied Saturday. And watched as Soliden brought its healing energy to another soul--a vision I have had all along for this magical place. It is healing me, healing T and I believe it will be a place to offer healing to many.

There is a very long story of how we got here-- much of it is chronicled through this blog and yet when I read Laini's Sunday Scribble on "Why I Live Where I Live" I felt the urge to put my arrival here in a perspective I haven't shared here before. But, could not find the juice.

(Have I mentioned the ass. dragging. of late? ASSSS. DRAAAGGGING.)

Maybe it was because Laini's description of Portland had me pulling my suitcases from the closet and ready to head to the city of Oz. Here, where I live there is no vibrant community of artists, no abundance of cafes or pubs spilling onto sidewalks, no music scene, no shops selling clothes by local designers.

But it is my home. Our home. A place that fills my needs for solace, personal freedom and daily inspiration. It surpasses anything I could have possibly imagined. And so, when I read Violet's question, "why live anywhere else?" My heart answered, why indeed.

I have no doubt of the healing powers of Soliden. Why would you long to wander? This picture makes me want to fall headlong into that meadow. I might remain until I am rooted.

I don't know where to start. Perhaps with the amazing colour of the flowers in your new picture, maybe it's to agree whole-souledly with Rebekahs desire to fall headlong into the meddow. I remember going on holiday with my husband to far north Queensland about 4 years ago. It is all mountains and tropical rainforrest. The same feeling of renewal that i felt by looking at the newness of that scenery and the lushness of it all, is the EXACT same feeling I have gotten by seeing the pics of your beautiful, wonderful home. I have no doubt it's a healing place. In my mind's eye I can see Ruby and Mr. Big (my other four legged baby) running madly from tree to tree as Matt and I stroll behind...just BEING.

Every time I look at one of your beautiful photo's of the land around Soliden I imagine pitching a teeny weeny tent (perhaps camoflage?) somewhere unobtrusive (not that I own a tent) so as not to spoil the view. It looks like a magical realm. How do you ever leave to go to work?

Soliden looks and sounds amazing to me. And it is all the more special because you got to create your house it from the ground up. How cool is that?

After reading you and some of the other writers who talked about where they live and why they live where they do, it gave me a lot to think about. I'm not sure where I live gives me any special feeling at all, other than a place to be and work. Maybe I'm missing out on something. I'm certainly missing out on a view like yours. You're a lucky woman!

Your photo says it all ... in fact --- I am wondering --- is there another piece of property available with such a lovely view?

Do you know what it means that there is no vibrant collective of artists where you live? It means you are a pioneer, making way for other creative souls to crest the hill, see Soliden, and say, "Look, an oasis of creativity."

The best part is that you are capable and willing to really appreciate all the good around you. So many people would grow inured to the beauty around them, but you seem constantly aware and in awe. That is a gift and reminder to everyone to see the beauty where they are.

I wholeheartedly believe in the healing properties of Soliden. I know you and T planned for it, dreamed it, and literally built your home with your sweat and tears and love. It seems a magic place, and it's beautiful in all its seasons.

Your words say it all - a place to fill your need for solace, personal freedom and inspiration - why indeed, should you live anywhere else? Why would anyone want to, surrounded by that much beauty!

That last photo is amazing. If I didn't live in lovely Seattle, I'd be super jealous. OK, I'm a little jealous anyway.

This post caused me to dream big with Joe about where we'll finally settle. Wherever we go I hope to feel as at home as you do at Soliden. When you share that sense of home it fills me up. Someday, I will have a home too.

I believe we are called to where we need to be at a particular point in our lives. I need healing now and my home offers that solace, just as you're finding solace in Soliden. Recharge my dear and enjoy your beautiful safe haven.
