February 17, 2006 4:02 PM- on imitation and flattery

Alright by you if I diverge into a mimi smartypants-esque post?
Alrighty then.

People at work need to stop saying:

"I don't disagree with you."

"Let's not bite off more than we can chew and swallow and digest. Okay people? Cause I know we all like to bite off a lot but we've got to be able to digest or we're just gonna end up with our mouths full."

"Let's just go after some of that low-hanging fruit."

"I think what Bob (Chet, Bill, Ed, Earl, Norman--take your pick) is poking at here . . ."

"What we're looking to hit is the sweet spot. We need to find the sweet spot and hit it."

Please. Somebody. Make. Them. Stop.
And I know you think I'm just making this up or exaggerating but I'm not it is so much worse than this and they say these phrases over and over and over and OVER. I touch the sides of my head to see if I still have ears and they are like fossilized apricots.

Cool crafty thing-y for those of you who are clever like that

For my birthday, Tara gave me a bouquet of felt flowers. They are too wonderful. Looky look look. You can do all kinds of things with them-- kind of like Gumby meets home decor.

They're also fun cause right now it is gray and brown outside like Spring (yes! Spring!) and it's like having flowers without all the death and dying and dropping of the petals and cries for food and water.

Also? You can make them into a bouquet centerpiece or string them along a windowsill-- truly-- you crafters out there-- these are cool.

I hear you, but I love her.

I know many of the AW blogs I read now have bitched a bit about Julia C and her style/ways/deficiencies and I just have to say, she doesn't bother me. At all. Which is surprising since most people do, especially "guru" types. For some reason, I can fill in where she misses a beat and I ignore what doesn't fit for me, personally. I just think what she puts out there is awesome and it helps me so much. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. However, I do agree with Tinker who wished there were more "art" excercises and less "writing" excercises . .Mostly? I'm loving this infusion of creativity into my life and get so much out of visiting others and seeing how they are dealing with the same stuff.

There's a Fan Girl wearing my t-shirt.

There is one person in my real life who now reads this blog and she just emailed me to tell me she is addicted to bluepoppy! Now, on the one hand you might say-- well, yeah, hello-- it's just cause she's a damn relative. But on the other, hello-- she knows me in real life! How could what I write here possibly interest her when she can get the full monty, so to speak, any day of the week?

It just gives me the biggest kick.

And so-- much much more to tell, but I am home today to spend time with T before he heads off on his 10-day extravaganza. The firewood is stacked and my shotgun is at the ready. (I bought if from some guy named dcheney on ebay for SUCH a deal!)

bluepoppy is building her fan base, one relative at a time

got 2 cents?

I LOVE the flowers! (And I also love the Dick Cheney joke!) And you do have a fan base ... I haven't even met you, much less am I related to you (wait .... maybe we're long lost siblings?)

"Let's 'table' that for now." "Put that in a 'tickler' file." "What are the 'deliverables'?" "Let's 'carve out' some time for that." I double second your corporate lingo angst - make it stop!

You have BP t-shirts? I want. Oh, office lingo that I DO NOT miss, oh no I don't: "let's get dialed in on that", the lame fist in the air for me to hit with my fist, "burn me a copy of that" when talking about printing (no, not CDs), and my all time favorite, "you need to watch your tone cus it's making the [all male construction industry] managers think you're a bitch." I'm not making any of them up either.

When I worked for Intel (eons ago, it seems), they were simply over the top in IntelSpeak...really, it was like learning a new language! As for being home alone: when we left Adam home and in charge when he was about 17, he kept our baseball bat next to his bed. We sort of giggled about that, when we found out. As for relatives reading my blog...hell,no...then how could I bitch about them and their Republican/Catholic-born-again crap?

I started twitching after reading the first office quote that makes you crazy, and by the time I read the last, I had a full blown case of hives. I work at home now so, thank God, I don't have to survive the endless meetings with all that talk, talk, talk that SAYS nothing, people. I hear ya; I feel your pain (oh, see, I slipped right back into it for a moment). Love the flowers. And the Julia Cameron affirmation. Although I am behind (yes...but I'm hanging my head in shame), I appreciate her insights a lot. No problems here with AW.

I probably know the answer to this, based on your previous posts, but you work with a bunch of Heavyset White Guys, don't you? As opposed to a group of white men who are perhaps a little on the heavy side. There's a difference, you know. And the flowers? Bee-you-ti-full! I don't suppose that Tara could be persuaded to give a tutorial, or point those of us in the throes of February Greyness toward a pattern?

teehee, this post made me laugh, a lot. thanks for that. :-) and i agree with you on the whole cameron thing. i can see where everyone is coming from in their annoyance with her writing, but it doesn't bother me either. i believe there are some art-like exercises coming up soon!

I really must be less whiny in my posts! I AM enjoying the whole AW experience; though I must admit I am looking forward to the collage-thingy coming up this week. For the record - Julia Cameron/AW rocks! As you do, BluePoppy! From a true blue/non-relative BP fan :>) p.s. Love, LOVE, LOVE the Gumby flowers!

Cute flowers. I'm reading another book by Julia C, and it sounds much like the A.W. - lot's and lot's of writing. 3 pages, longhand, each morning. I like it, get's the creative juices flowing (another cheesy office term) but I feel like I'm developing arthritis in my writing hand.

Your sense of humor is such a bright spot in my day. I am guilty of saying "I appreciate your point...you...what you are saying...BUT" a little too often. Picked that one up at my last job... These flowers are just so adorable! Love them. And so much fun bringing some spring into your house. And...I want a t-shirt too!!!

Love the funny Gumby flowers - they go anywhere and everywhere! Some days, if you're feeling low, they can be your crown! As for the AW bitching thing - it's good to know that you CAN dissent if you wanna, and it helps me with some of the issues where I'm struggling (which is with ALL OF IT right now); to go, "Okay, maybe I'm not crazy" or whatever. I have searched my whole house over for the Right to Write by Julia C as I think it would be a good companion for AW, but my copy has gone missing. Oh well. Watch where you point that shotgun!!

Oh god, the annoying office cliches... Silly people THINK they make them sound smart, but it has the opposite effect. They also prevent people from doing any thinking on their own. You just want to shake them and scream, "Yes but what the hell does that really MEAN?!??!" Still, the dumbest thing I've ever heard has got to be, "Did you KNOW that most wars are caused because of religion?" followed by a smug, self-satisfied, I've-got-it-all-figured-out nod. WHAT have these people been doing all their lives? Anywho, enjoying AW so far, although I haven't seen any concrete results as of yet. I'm easily irritated but Ms. Cameron hasn't done it to me yet... which has got to be a good sign. And BP - still very interested in the "miracle stories" you mentioned before on my blog! Please share!

those flowers rock! i have to admit that i loved aw when i worked it a few years ago. of course i was artistically dead and dry so mizz jc was such a welcome, freeing voice for me. and my group did end up creating our own "art" activities because we wanted more, more, more too.

Unfortunately, I know you're not exaggerating about what people say at work--I'm about to hear 5 full days of it at a corporate retreat to hell. And since it's mostly men, our leisure activities are a golf tournament and a hockey game. Got to get that testosterone flowing. I need those felt flowers to make me feel better!

Hahahaha it took a while to get the joke about Cheney!!!!! "What we're looking to hit is the sweet spot. We need to find the sweet spot and hit it." They really SAY that?! Hahaha I'm glad that the men in my office are all way out of touch with the latest "office terms".

I was googling "annoying office lingo" and I came upon your site. I'm trying to outfox the foxes here at my mundane office job, and am looking for some ridiculous terms to throw into meetings, just to see if they catch on amongst the populace. I just got out of a meeting with the CEO, CIO, and a few others, where the following terms were liberally thrown around: Metrics, Drill-down (as in, "let's drill-down the facts here."), effort (as in, "can we effort this project?"), and lastly, my favorite, off-line (as in, "Maybe we should consider this issue off-line."). Truly amazing. I just thought I'd share, before I continue my quest to find more ridiculous terms to "wow" my innane co-workers with!
