December 21, 2005 2:24 PM- the communicators

Do you like it?

Why are you asking me that? You don?t like it?

Why are you being so defensive?

Why don?t you like it?

I didn?t say I didn?t like it.

But you don?t.

I didn?t say that.

Then why do you need to know if I like it?

Because you don?t.

How do you know that?

I can tell.

You think I don?t like it?

I know you don?t like it.

So why are you asking me if I like it?

I want you to tell me that you like it.

Even if I don?t?

You don?t like it?

I hate it.

got 2 cents?

There's also the 'Jewish' version so often channeled in my family: So do you like it? Yes. Really? Yes, really. Do you like it better than last years gift? Yes, I like it! Better than last year? Yes. ... What was wrong with last years gift?

Patry says:
female shopper: agonizes over each gift, checks out everything comparable, repeatedly asks herself. Will she/he like it? Asks the question again while wrapping it. Studies the recipient's face while opening it, and then imagines the answer, oh no, he doesn't like it. Your dialogue ensues. Male shopper: goes out at the last minute. Buys the first thing that looks acceptable. Pays to have it wrapped or more likely persuades someone else to do it. Doesn't give it another thought.
