February 25, 2005 9:52 AM- soliden update

View from the "front" door.

I put front in quotes since this isn't technically at the front of the house but on the driveway side. BUT, this is where the main entrance of the house will be.

View from the garage looking into the house through the "mud" room.

We will call it the mud room but it could so easily also be called the "place we drop all our guff" room, or the "leave your shoes and boots here" room, or the "drop your filthy gardening clothes here" room. Now, doesn't "mud" room sound so much easier than all that?

View of the mud room from the outside.

View of the "study," or room where T will watch lots of television (far left corner). On the right you see one wall of the kitchen and a sliver of kitchen window.

So much to share I don't know where to begin. I got back last night from Boston to find that T had fired the crew of carpenters. This is not a bad thing as they turned out to be a bunch of "fair-weather" carpenters with bad attitude who were both expensive and slow. (BTW, have I used enough quotation marks for you in this post? What a nice change from my usual dependency on parenthesis, non?).

You may think that T is a hard-ass but you would be so wrong. He gave them every opportunity to turn things around-- a hundred second chances. If it were me, they would've been fired the first time they didn't show up without calling, or left at 1pm (after arriving at 11 am hungover) cause they wanted to go skiiing. T is so gentle-natured it tore him up to cut them loose, but this morning? He is so happy and the bad cloud is gone. He had gotten to the point where he dreaded going to the job site in the morning cause of their attitude . . . can you imagine? Dreading going to Soliden? How insane is that? So, please send good wishes up to the sky that we get a happier crew who has a good work ethic and wants to create a good work environment (hot young studs, optional).

Boston/Cambridge was freaking magical. My friend Tara is a goddess and everyone should have such a friend. She plied me with gorgeous wine and food, took me to her gym where we did lunges and squats to the point that my ass and hamstrings are STILL sore three days later. She took me to the most faboo stretching class that has ever existed. (frecklegirl and anyone else who lives in Cambridge-- you MUST check out this class if you want to feel amazing--- it is in Central Square at the Dance Studio right across the street from Central Kitchen. The class is Wednesday nights at 6:30 with Lisa, who is just AMAZING. Take my word for this, AH-MAZE-ING).

I also got another Thai massage (not quite as excellent as the first one but still truly wonderful and it continues to hold first place as my current favorite kind of bodywork.

The end result? I feel so good. I feel like my old self again. And am ready to face the world. Because in and around all of this bodywork, eating and drinking, I also got some good good good writing done.

And, I also (for the very first time) went to the NPR studio and watched Ta in action as she produced two shows back to back. It was sooooo cool. I promise to post this weekend about that in detail as it deserves a full blow by blow. Right now? I must go get my car registered and inspected. Then I meet T up at Soliden and we are going to snowshoe up the hill behind our house site. (I'll post pics if any come out good). No promises, my pics from this week were pretty disappointing to me. It's still a hit and miss game for this guppy photog.

got 2 cents?

I love watching your house take shape. It is very cool! I hope you find good and reliable carpenters soon. And I'm glad you're feeling like your old self again.

The house looks great. I've always liked walking through newly built houses, the smell of the sawdust, empty rooms, imagining what it would look like when it was finally done (my dad was a builder). I'm sure you'll find some better carpenters to do the job.

The pictures of the house coming to life are wonderful. I bet it has that great sawdust smell to it too.

I wish for you hot studly construction workers, oh wait, that part was optional; um, I wish for wonderful hard working good attitude construction workers for your lovely abode. For me, I wish everything hot and studly. Yay for the good writing, and good friends.

Sending good carpenter karma your way. Here's to some dudes with a FABULOUS work ethic (something sorely lacking in these parts, I'm afraid). Glad you had a great trip...and that you're feeling so good.

The house looks wonderful -- and my hat is off to T, because that's always a tough thing to do. You're right though, that Soliden should stay free of dread and dark clouds, no matter the weather.

Hope y'all find a carpenter extrordinaire who loves Soliden almost as much as you do. Glad you got some badly needed r&r

Hurray for decisive action on T's part to remove that bad black cloud of aggravation from you both AND Soliden. Also, you are definitely supporting my theory that everything is better after massage. :) Your house is grand and inviting.

Yay for feeling like your old self! (If you could package that, I could use some of it, except that I don't really want to feel like my old self, but a whole new self entirely.) And good for T for firing bad carpenters. I hate builders who don't follow through and act as though they can because they're so in demand. Or anybody who does that, really. (It's almost enough to make me learn a trade, except that nobody in their right mind should let me near the power tools.) (See, I'm doing your parentheses for you!) But yays all around!

Good for T!!! I hope a crew of punctual, teetotalling, hunky carpenters extraordinaire show up today...and your weekend sounds fabulous! Where does one sign up for one of those?

I love stumbling upon other people's construction projects. Ours is almost done (see for yourself at my blog). Beautiful setting. . . Where are you building? Also, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Boston. I just moved last June from there to Maine where I am building my home.

what is it about the word 'guppy' that just makes me smile? I am so GLAD you got to run away with Ta and have some wonderful girl time. Where would be without good friends? And hooray for T, I am sure you two will find some nice groovy carpenter boys who know it's an honor to build Soliden!

The construction game...ah, how well I remember...our contractor ended up not paying most of the subs, who came after us...and we had already paid the contractor in full. Nightmare! Glad you had a happy-happy weekend and that you were spoiled senseless. We all need that once in awhile.

In merrie olde Englande the "mud room" would be known as the "tradesman's entrance". My brother-in-law has one, as he builds boats and has a clean-freak girlfriend, and he reports that it's saved many a squabble. I do like "mud room", though. Succinct.

Oh Darling BP, to you want me to send my daddy up there to help you? He is the God of all Carpenters... works extremely fast and is so accurate... I'd come too, and we'd sit on your deck and smoke even though I quit months ago....oh and I'd have to bring sam, too. She'd kill me if I went without her. Good luck Good Luck Good Luck!!!
