November 13, 2009 11:07 AM- like falling off a bicycle

November has always been a significant month of beginnings for me, but I am as surprised as you are that today I have the key in the ignition of this old site and am crankin' her up. Would you believe me when I tell you it started with a clutch of flowers?

Okay, so flowers might be too strong a word seeing as it is mid-November (and may I just say I was shocked to learn that today is the 13th day of the 11th month . . . this only dawned on me as I created a new folder to house the photos I took a few minutes ago. The eleventh month? Wait . . that would mean we are nearing the close of another year. How does that happen . . . seriously. I am all kinds of lost. if you had asked me the time of year before this moment, I feel pretty certain my response would be something like, 'um end of summer getting ready for autumn ish?' Take note kids, this is what happens to people who spend their days roaming fields and woods whose only contact with newspaper is to crumple it up as firestarter).

whew! Now that's what I call a walk in the weeds . . let me reconnect to the first half of the sentence I left somewhere up there.

As the dogs and I rolled up the hill this morning from a rather long gadabout (that I was loathe to end seeing as the heavenly Indian summer weather continues to linger around us), I decided to go back down into the field for a moment to gather up some wild bits as an offering of thanks to the spirits that have blessed us with this warm, fabulous weather for the past 10 days. I had seen some bright yellow yarrow on my way out and thought it'd be nice. I picked one or two blossoms and then added in some purple clover and whatnot slipped it into a small ring of birch bark and voila, a posy fit for Demeter!

I placed it in the outdoor altar* and went inside.

And that would've been that except when I went downstairs to see what Oliver had gotten up to, I found him, most unusually, parked under the posy as if a keeper of the flame. It was the kind of thing that had me going back upstairs to get my camera because he was so funny there, all curled up with no intention of coming inside.

Of course, once the camera came out suddenly Henry and Daisy were vitally concerned about protecting the little altar, too.

Henry: oh look at the pretty flowers. We should make sure no birds come and fly away with them, right?

Ollie: Grrrrrr . . . copycat.

Henry: You're just jealous that I have chosen a more noble position than lying on the cold ground.

Ollie: By more noble, do you mean more photogenic?

Henry: I resent the implication of that remark.

Ollie: Bite me.

And so, I snapped the photos as they snapped at each other and it was only when I was loading them onto the computer that I realized, my god-- the dogs, they are getting old. Ollie and Henry are now seven and Daisy is three. If I don't start posting photos again, the next time you all see them they'll be white and wizened.

Henry: Who you calling old?

Thus, I found myself squeaking out a few drops of oil onto my rusty finger joints and tapping out a post on this fine Friday. I can only guess this means there's more to come . .

bisous, Elizabeth

*P.S. Yes! For those of you who might remember that the bottom of our house was once wrapped in tar paper for what, two? three? four? years (oh gosh, who's counting? I revel in a fine unfinished house project as much as the next carpenter's wife) . . last summer saw the tar paper replaced with a stone veneer. Hoo-YAH. Even better, every stone came from the property itself, so I suppose I should be less harsh to that carpenter boy since he was the one who trundled about collecting them up. But really, I want to thank the amazing mason who assembled them with such artistry and who, completely unprompted by me, put in a little alcove/altar space because he thought it would be something I'd like. Seriously, I came home and there it was.

And then? A pink unicorn shot out my ass . . . *hand to God*.

got 2 cents?

Clearly now I am rambling! YOu're back. WOOHOOO!
