September 18, 2008 9:11 AM- on love, loyalty & leashes
Right after I last wrote to you, I grabbed the dogs and headed up the hill behind our house. Within about 20 minutes, Ollie had caught scent of a deer and high-tailed it into the woods with Daisy a flash of furry fury dead on his heels.
Henry was on the leash, so he sat and howled his funny, high pitch howl as I called for Daisy to return which, she did about 10 minutes later with Ollie close behind.
So then, both big dogs were on leashes as if I had simply switched them out-- Henry would've taken off with Daisy giving chase. I know this because? Um, let's just say, dogs are predictable creatures.
We get to the top and I tie the butterscotch boys to a spot in the shade while I snap some pics of the morning mist that the breeze is clearing off the valley below.
When I turn back to check on the dogs, this is the vignette I get:
OLLIE: She's looking over here-- smile, Henry. Pretend everything's fine.
HENRY: Ho, ho-- oh I love to sit tied to a bush. I really do. La la la.
OLLIE: Pssst. Daisy! Keep your head down!
HENRY: Ho, ho-- ah yes. Direct sun in my face. Oh, happy day.
OLLIE: Uh, oh-- she's coming over. I think she's on to us.
HENRY: Daisy, work faster!
HENRY: Wasn't me. Wasn't me!
I know I should be upset about her destroying another leash. I know I should know better than to underestimate the power of those sharp, little teeth. And yet, I love her loyalty. I really do. I just love her loyal spirit.
And so, with a last gaze over the top of Rattlesnake, we headed home with Ollie on leash, Henry free and Daisy dancing ahead-- so very pleased with herself.
Blessed be ~

Amy says: Elizabeth,
I promised my cabinmates I'd stop blurking and start commenting and boy will they be sorry they unleashed me. Anywho, just had to say first that your pups are the best and if I can ever figure out how to send a photo of my little Lola, her smirk will crack you up. I know she is talking all day long, too.
But what I really wanted to say is that I didn't head up to Squam entirely for the art (although who wouldn't want to take classes from the mythical, mystical Misty, the phunky, phabulous Penny and the jewell--"Jinormous"-hearted Judy Wise), but really I wanted to force myself to do something I'd never, ever done before, to cause a shift. And, wow, the shift has been of SEISMIC proportions, like really, a tsunami of shifting. I came home a better mother, daughter, wife, lover (oh yes I said it, LOVER), friend--just a better me. I feel like my heart is bursting and my head is spinning and everyone can see it. The checkout girl at ShopRite can see it, the mailman can see it, the man walking his dog past my house right now can see it, the other moms at school can see it. It's immense and epic and life-affirming. And I just want to say (once more) thank you for that. Thank you for the squillions of things you did to make SQUAM so larger than life. Thank you for helping me to create that shift. I'll be riding the wave, no SURFING IT, hanging 10, dammit! for the rest of my life.
