July 10, 2008 3:28 PM- good to know

Tuesday afternoon I got a call from my niece. She was supposed to come up for a weekend visit a few weeks back, but had to cancel due to an emergency-- if I recall some friends were going to get together for a pizza and maybe watch a movie after or something, depends, maybe go to the mall and then get a pizza?

You know, CRITICAL engagements pending . ..

So, when I saw her name on the teeny LED display of my phone I was pleased to see for once she was calling me. We chat for a moment. When I ask if she's ever going to get her butt up here this summer she giggles. I can hear her mother, my sister Christine, talking in the background.

They're thinking of coming up Wednesday or Thursday, if that's not too short notice.

Um, Wednesday-- you mean, tomorrow?

I hear Christine laugh.

I juggle my thoughts a bit-- we had guests last weekend, have guests arriving Friday night-- so I respond, okay, um-- let's do Thursday.

Ohhh, air is sucked through the teeth. Yeah, that won't work. We're going water-skiing at 2pm on Thursday and we have to be home for work early Friday morning.

Wednesday it is.

((And just so you know--- my sister may likely read this little ditty of mine so this is all to mock her impromptu ways in comparison to her younger, most hyper-planner-of-the-year sister)).

They got here around 4pm yesterday. The three of us made a gorgeous dinner while T fielded questions from Christine about how best to lay bathroom tile among other scintillating bathroom renovation descant--- then dawdled over dessert and coffee while T cleaned the kitchen. Then he headed down to watch tv and the three of us went up into my studio, cranked music and made journals until the wee hours.

This morning, while my sister meditated (hmmm, am I seriously going to have to learn from my older sister? Do you know how much resistance I must overcome to allow myself to do anything the same way my sister does it? Is this a younger sibling disease? Is there a remedy?) my niece and I took the dogs for a walk down to the secret creek.

After we got back, the three of us wandered up to town for lunch. A quick good-bye and they were off to their waterskiing-- I dashed over to say a final farewell to some friends who are moving to Asheville, North Carolina and now?

Time for me to go talk to a certain young lass about a ball.

Oh, but wait, I almost forgot-- my favorite part of the visit? When my sister walks into the living room, settles onto the sofa and then says to me with a smile, "your house doesn't smell like dog."

Baby, that's t-shirt material right there.

got 2 cents?

Wah! I want some houseguests!!!! Why no visitors for me? None of our Texan friends will even ponder the idea of coming out to Oregon to see us. Gees. They just don't know what they are missing. Or maybe they can't handle the idea that it validates the fact we are NEVER moving back to that hellacioius place.

I wish I could meditate. When I try to meditate all I manage to do is clear my head of extraneous stuff so I can worry, worry, worry.

My older sister always comes into my house and sniffs and says the same thing to me. We have 3 dogs and 4 cats. The last time she did this, she came over the next day and steam cleaned my area rug b/c she could "almost" smell something. She's compulsive about animals and houses but hey, at least I didn't have to do it myself.

Oh yes ... the dreaded dog smell - I'm lucky that with four it generally doesn't smell too bad, but some days when it's really humid, well, some doggy smells do come out. But I refuse to turn on the AC until I absolutely have to!

Here I'm thinking the best part had to be "while T cleaned the kitchen"... Is he for rent, by any chance?

ha ha, Bethany, well, the truth is, the conversation had veered DEEPLY into the metaphysical and I think he was a bit more comfortable washing up then traveling with us down the woo-woo highway

SO glad to hear that your lovely niece is doing well! Awww. I had such a good time with her when she came to Paris. I think there is a dynamic like you and your sister have in my family...
