June 17, 2008 12:13 PM- les marguerites

This morning I took the dogs for a hike up the mountain and for some reason it was a bit more challenging than usual. Perhaps because a number of giant trees had fallen down across the trail forcing us to create alternate routes over and around? Perhaps because I had only one cup of coffee before heading out? Perhaps because a week of red wine, sourdough boule with fresh butter and homemade apple crisp with creamery ice cream had finally caught up with me?

Ahh-- if only research and data appealed to me as making shit up does.

That picture of Henry above just slays me. Does he not look like a jolly old Englishman settling in with a fat cigar?

No? Okay, just me then.

More evidence of the atypical level of tuckering this little jaunt caused in all of us: Daisy's sudden need to snooze.

But she perked up a few minutes later.

Turns out, once I'd checked my phone to see the time, I saw that we had done the hike in 35 minutes-- um, on a GOOD day it takes me 50 minutes to reach the top-- so I guess the Great Why So Tired Mystery has been solved.

Now we're home-- dogs are ZONKED and I am enjoying the cool breeze on my sweaty neck. The weekend was gray, overcast, rainy, blah-- but today the winds of change are shaking things up nicely. T and I have recently decided where to plant some climbing rose bushes (okay, it was his idea, but I concurred--does that not count as joint decision? Yes, I thought as much), but in the meantime, everything's coming up daisies.

UPDATED to ADD: a photo of Ollie from this morning for Jazz. I didn't think it was a particularly great shot-- that's why I didn't include it, but far be it for me to keep the Oll-ster from his legion of fans . . .

got 2 cents?

Ollie? Ollie? Where are you Ollie? What did you do with Ollie? As for Henry does indeed look like a jolly old Englishman - even the name fits. All you have to do now is dress him in tweed.

Fantastic views! Love seeing the back of your head, and yes, Henry, oh yeah. He's so photogenic. Looks Scottish to me, though.

sounds like the week "off" did you good. I always come back to "reality" feeling strong and energized. No wonder you did that hike in almost 1/2 the time ;) PS-I'm still trying to figure out how a chihuahua and a yellow lab got together....

We had some log hopping two weekends ago. Zephyr was disturbingly reminiscent of a mountain goat. The big lug. xo

Oh, how I crave the opportunity to linger on top of that mountain next to you, the cigar smoking Scotsman, the daintily sleeping nymph and the elusive Ollie.

YOu are so lucky to have this only 35 minutes from your house! I can take a walk, but I would be eaten alive in 5 SECONDS right now. Mosquitos, blackflies and now deerflies. Oh joy. Great pics. Cheryl

I feel a little tuckered out just reading about it. I think I may need one of those impromptu-Daisy-naps :~) No wonder you have those fab legs!

Love the picture of Henry - he indeed looks like an Englishman. He's kind of like the Hugh Grant of dogdom - I mean that in a good way of course.

I know you keep your location a secret, but I hiked Mt. Passaconaway this past weekend and thought the whole time, maybe BP lives around here! Then we drove by Squam Lake and I thought--oh, maybe that's why she's having the Squam art festival. And as my boyfriend dreamed out loud about the house he'd like to have in NH, I talked about this woman whose blog I read that lives entirely on solar power and a backup generator. He scoffed. He does not believe me. You mention trails that you hike with the dogs. Are these shared trails or on your land? I'm just learning the basics of backpacking/hiking and the leave-no-trace style of camping, so I think we stick to wilderness trails. But I don't understand how the land is divided into a place where you can build a house and what's considered wilderness! In the meantime, I will imagine that you live on every mountain in NH, and at any moment I right right into the butterscotch triplets. PS What's a "bear dog?" They're not allowed on trails.
