May 02, 2008 12:39 PM- fiddleheads

Each year, right about this time, but only for a week or ten days, you will find fiddleheads in the produce section of our local grocery store.

They will be nestled onto a styrofoam tray and wrapped with clear plastic.

Though it is a much beloved seasonal delicacy in these parts, I think it's safe to say that I would recoil with less horror if it happened to be, say, tiny baby doll heads staring up at me blankly instead.

Um. I can see you right now thinking of how good those would taste saut?ed with a bit of olive oil and garlic, non? Well sure, bet you also like to eat fresh, young cobwebs.

Seriously, I like to think I could handle eating nutritious weeds, but these just freak me the hell out. I mean, what is that pink energy force coming down from the sky if not a ship of pod people coming to collect their harvest?

Daisy: You can keep your weird earth growths--give me a fresh pile of moose duds anyday.

got 2 cents?

i, for one, would skip the fiddleheads and march straight for the morels. Besides, the fiddleheads always looked a wee bit on the furry side for me.

So I'm not alone. I've never really understood the appeal. Especially since ferns are so damn beautiful if you allow them to grow...

Heh. You said "duds" and I thought "clothes" and mused on how moose clothes wouldn't be so bad. I'm with you on the fiddleheads, though! Though I suppose I'd try them if they were served to me by someone I trusted.

Looks like you got a taker for those fiddleheads. I'm feelin weird all over after reading this post. Have you ever tasted them? What do they taste like? Do NH'ers make a swet fiddlehead pie or is it strictly a salty sauteed treat? They do look very alien-ish.

Hmmm. never tasted a fiddlehead. Maybe I would try it...but don't really feel the need. I mean, are they some kind of superfood? I do find them really beautiful to look at though...ferns in general. In the woods. Especially in NH woods.

Maybe your aversion makes sense: my mother, who knows everything about nutrition (in my opinion) says that ferns are air pollutant filters and that eating fiddleheads might not be the best thing ever, even if they are local. :) And I agree, they totally look like aliens.

I have never heard of these and they do look odd. I don't think I would be putting one in my mouth.
