April 24, 2008 8:18 AM- a surfeit of photos

Do you ever think, wow-- this woman needs to be taught the ways of posting photos at a website? Because she CLEARLY does not get the whole "there is such a thing as too many photos on a single post" concept!

I'm sorry. Have I lead you to believe that I know anything of moderation? My bad.

When it comes to pink flowering trees, there is no such thing as excess. Well, okay-- maybe I need to get a bit of a grip as just yesterday I was standing under a dogwood tree that had bloomed into a virtual orgasm of my favorite shades of pink and, perhaps I was murmuring, you know, under my breath or at the very least quietly speaking with the tree and having a total Their Eyes Were Watching God moment when this suited-up dude totally invaded my space (okay, so the tree happens to be right outside an establishment of law and legally it might have been me invading their space, but you know-- what. ever.) and gave me SUCH a look that could only be interpreted as, "lady, you are so on the hairy edge."

Which, you know-- I freely admit. Pink flowering trees have complete power over me.

As do small, vintage diners with fountain service. Basically, if you write the words "fountain service" on the window of your restaurant, you pretty much own me.

That's right, baby. We don't need your stinkin' Starbucks to come and gentrify our world.

((Oh god, since I recently shared with you the sad, sad way that the soundtrack of my inner life often runs, I might as well admit to you that I now how have Madonna's ditty "Justify My Love" rewritten to "Gentrify My Love" looping across my neural network-- oh, somebody make it stop)).

Perhaps you are wondering wherefore the urban photo blitz? Well, yesterday was the last day of the semester for me. oh can we say that one more time? LAST DAY OF THE SEMESTER. I am done. done. done. And, sharpen your arrows and dip them in your most virulent poison before letting them fly when I tell you that for the first time in my adult life, I am looking at four solid months of holiday. Four consecutive months where I am not working.

Okay,

*ducks*

let the arrows fly.

I think it's safe to say I'm going to be having some time on my hands for indulgences like walking around snapping shots.

That is, until one of your deadly arrows connects with the delicate flesh of my neck . . .

got 2 cents?

How I long to visit Canada, its pink flowers and fountain services. One less flower and the post would not be as perfect as it is. I'm not letting loose any arrows. More vacation means more postings. Yippee.

Your photos are actually pretty damn good, but not nearly as evocative as the pictures you write.

First thing I did was check my library for this book. An excerpt of the first chapter hooked me instantly. Can hardly wait till it arrives. Second thing I did was check my dictionary for a couple definitions. (I'm a life long student, I admit). Third was a thought; were you hungry? I know I'm am craving a cozy diner experience in a quiet small town after seeing your photos. Hope your free time is filled with indulgences!

I always have two cents! Congrats on the vacation time. My daughter recently finished up her Masters degree and is quite happy with that finality. Oh, and as for the many pictures, I post so many flowers it would make one dizzy! Brenda

If I lived in a small town "Post Office Fruit" would probably be my job title - hee! As for stinky lawyer dude, he can suck it. I bet he doesn't even stop to admire the very tree he walks by every single day. I'm a big fan of dogwood and magnolia trees. I would have been right there with you!

Wow, your Northern schools wrap up early! I love those funky little diners, too, and their signage. I think since you'll be managing Squam, we can safely consider that MAJOR work, but hopefully very fun work. As for pink trees, they turn all of us a little mad. Oh! pink dogwoods! make my heart sing.

I love that diner! LOVE it. I have half a mind to run down to NH and force you to take me there. As for those 4 months OFF! I didn't see that sentence, I didn't read it, I have no knowledge whatsoever of it, otherwise I'd be obliged to kill you. *Le sigh*

WOW, in the last photo, does that pay phone work? I didn't even know they were still hangin' around, and are those store/diner pics from Boston? Lovely. The Dog Wood is delightful, I had one in my back yard for years, then it just up and quit blooming.

I've never been there, but I sure would like to go. Having lived in New England for almost five years now, I haven't explored nearly enough. Those small towns are hard to get to without a car, but they are still quite lovely by proxy. Thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah, pink flowering trees - my neighbor has a tulip magnolia that I just love! And those pics - just keep them coming - they make me smile (even though I might be sending some arrows of envy along with the smiles!).

See, all this time where you can share all these gorgeous images of your world. I, for one, am a strong believer in not too many pictures in a post. And I have two and a half months of summer, no job. Must finish Master's Thesis and help best friend with baby care, but that's cake compared to teaching high school. And then: I am a student again, on to master's #2.

Ah! My old stomping grounds! How amazing to see a place I know so well through your artistic eye. I had always meant to photo another classic oldie on the West Side called "Squog Fruit" but never got around to it and now sadly it is just a memory- I have learned my lesson and now make every effort to photograph these kinds of places before they are all gone; thank you for immortalizing P.O.Fruit so beautifully!
