February 25, 2008 6:28 AM- make art, make art

Best. Oscar. Moment. Ever.

After being rushed off stage without the chance to say thank you, Marketa Irqlova is brought back out by Jon Stewart to have her moment and how lovely was she? How poised and articulate and utterly inspiring was she?

Most especially, when she entreated us to, "make art, make art!"

I also loved when Marion Cotillard won.

Talk about a mix of pure surprise and overwhelming OMG joy with beauty and poise. (Yes, poise ranks right up there for me-- that's why, ugh, Katherine Heigl, so bad. And while I'm mentioning bad-- holy god, did you people SEE Nicole Kidman-- like Norma Desmond's younger sister, Morna, non?)

And Brad Bird? Oh, he rocks my world.

But oddly, (and I haven't read anyone else's take on the show so maybe it's just me) I thought Jon Stewart (aside from his redeeming moment of bringing Marketa back out)-- who I previously might have thought could never do no wrong-- was pretty much a dick.

Seriously. Jon, you get a C+ (and the plus is only because I really do love you-- but man, not last night).

So-- it's just getting light out here. I know I've been absent of late, but that's due to so many things going on, not the least of which is fighting the elements. However, this past weekend was a real breakthrough as we actually got a cord of firewood delivered.

Yes, we live on acres of woods, but had firewood pre-chopped, pre-dried delivered to our porch. For those of you who don't use firewood every day of your long-ass winter, let me put that in persepective for you. It's kind of like having a dishwasher installed when you've been washing every plate, glass, and fork by hand. It's also kind of like going to a full-service gas station instead of just getting out of the damn car and filling the tank yourself. Well, you know, if it took you 3 days to drag, saw and chop a tank of gas instead of having some guy just shove in a hose and fill your tank.

It was an extravagance-- but it bought T three days to focus on all of his OTHER projects. And, oh the beauty of dry wood-- I could write an ode.

*wipes tear from eye*

February, otherwise known as the month in the belly of the whale if the whale was Antartica, seems to be coming to a close. A new month shimmers on the horizon with the promise of a week of holiday and I can hardly wait. Not that we're going anywhere. Not that I won't have a deskload of work, but you know, vacation-- right now, I'll take it in any form at all.

got 2 cents?

I don't watch the oscars, so I don't know about what went on but dry wood is indeed a thing of beauty.

I have been without t.v. do to Direct T.V. not being able to access my roof because of snow, ice and rain. I have read several interesting scenarios on those Oscar's, I am somewhat sorry I missed them. Maybe I will have to visit youtube.

I LOVE the Oscars, well actually I don't really care about them, only the dresses and Javier Bardem in a tux - and I LOVED Marion Cotillard - she was exactly the same when she won the Bafta for best actress. (Though I was glad they kept repeating footage of her acceptance as I couldn't work out what she was saying for ages...oh, angels, yes!) So sweet. Sadly we don't get the full Oscars anymore - only on Sky which I don't have. So I got up at 6am to watch snippets of it on morning tv. Sad...

Traditionally, March has been our snowiest month. I'm actually hoping for a snowstorm, after coming back from a weekend in Wisconsin, watching our dogs do some serious romping. Missed the Oscar's also. My TV doesn't get reception, so we just Netflix ourselves to death.

I am glad to hear someone other than myself noticed Jon's dick-ness. I summed it up as nerves got the best of him as I noticed him use the gesture of putting his hand to mouth as if he were in great thought only to deliver the line with well rehersed delivery. Or, perhaps the writers were pulled out of their slumber and forced to get something out there in haste? It was a little bland. Marion was unbelieveable! I must see her movie. Did you see how old she looks in the movie clips? She is just a babe, as in young but yes, she is beautiful too. Her dress--georgeous! I really must renew my workouts. I want to look like a mermaid too! Dry wood, delivered like a present, ready to burn? Go ahead, give it a kiss.

i totally agree about jon stewart...i hate to say it, but he just was kind of a jerk. the dennis hopper thing...ugh. i don't know, he seemed off. but that moment where he brought her back was perfection. those two made my heart just soar...i have been singing that song all day. so glad you got that firewood...i hate washing dishes by hand...it sounds like in a way it might even be more comparable to washing clothes by hand...yes? :) hoping today is a beautiful day for you...

Have to agree about Jon Stewart - kinda lame (except for the song gal recall). Most dresses were very glam - except that gal who wrote Juno and the best supporting actress gal - she really looked bad! Oh, enough of the celeb shoot-downs, eh?? Been reading some of the comments on Squam Art Workshops - I'm a big fan of Judy Wise and thought YES, not having to pay airfare to W. Coast but your costs are higher than Artfest even including airfare. Bummer.

It was great to be in Prague today - Czechs kept exclaiming about Once's Oscar win, they were just pleased as punch. Most people here weren't aware of the impact of Marketa's speech - it is nice to hear about from the States!

oh yes...the joy of dry wood - last year that is, the NOT joys of washing dishes by hand which I've been doing for two solid years now...sick and tired of the damn dishes, that's for sure - the dishwasher here is kaputsky! and needs replacing...how many bags do I need to sell to get a new dishwasher, eh? gah! oh, and them oscars, just didn't watch it this year - I went to oscar.com this morning and YES! Helen Mirren continues to have my vote...amazing.

Missed the awards, but saw a few photos. Spot on with Kidman. And I love Jon Stewart, too...so maybe it's good I didn't watch. Oh dry, crackling, non-smoking wood. Heaven. And good for you!

I thought Javier Bardem dedicating his award to his mom in Spanish was awafully sweet. I love Tilda Swinton, part of her appeal is her refusal to kow tow to traditional beauty standards. She is always striking, if not exactly chic or glamorous. I want a dishwasher! Waaa!

So glad you're catching a break from your life of too many projects. It's about time. I agree about Jon Stewart. I thought Ellen DeGeneres was great last year. Someone said there was a clip of her vacuuming the floor. She is so funny.
