October 26, 2007 11:44 AM- maple leaves

Today my family is gathered in Paris.

Some hours this morning were spent in an old church whose walls are sooty from centuries of incense and whose ancient stone floors will chill the soles of your feet even in the heat of July. Right now, as the funeral service must surely be over, I imagine they are sitting chez ma tante, perhaps drinking coffee, perhaps tea. No doubt their bodies and minds are dull, drained from heartache and crying. My young cousin died last Thursday.

Somewhere a clock is muffled, a mother and father sit in the terrible darkness that follows the loss of their child, and yet, from my window, gold leaves sparkle in the morning sunshine.

A classmate comes into my printmaking class. She is late. Her eyes are wild with grief. She sets up her stuff next to mine. When our eyes connect, hers overflow with tears. Her dog, a one-year old yellow lab, got hit by a car and died the next day. For the next three hours, we work silently next to each other. There?s nothing I can say.

This morning I went to visit Jeanine. And my heart breaks again.

Her baby kitten.

And still, out my window it?s nothing but orange and blue.

It should be raining.

got 2 cents?
