October 23, 2007 9:15 AM- morning has broken

The best part about a lousy night, aside from having your feet licked by Nurse Daisy every time your lungs erupted in a hacking fit which was only about every 6.2 minutes?poor puppy got no sleep last night? is that you won?t be sleeping through the dawn of a new day.

(And by lousy, I mean your husband has to sleep down the hall in a guest room so that someone in the house gets a decent night?s sleep which, you know, is for the best, but, you know, it?s a bit of the insult to the injury that I must also be deprived of cuddling.

Damn you, chest cold! You have no heart.)

Not to say that a minor infection of the bronchial track is anything more than discomfort or inconvenience? trust me, I?m only whining to you all. On the other side of this monitor I am all about the hale and the hardy.

Some of you might remember how especially pink and purple the early sky is at this time of year. Of course, it all passes in a matter of moments so if you don?t stumble out into the field with your camera ready, it?ll melt away before you can say, Sit Lux!

Speaking of Latin mottos (which brings my thoughts to the academic life), I think I might have a situation on my hands.

Yesterday my composition students had to turn in the rough draft of their research paper (10-12 pages). As expected, most of them barely broke 8 pages and their bibliographies were rather shaky. However, one student, a student who has yet to hand in any written assignments lo these many weeks (not one), dropped a fat, 10-page paper on my desk replete with bibliography. As I glanced over it, it seemed, well, how shall I say?most professional? And no, I don?t think this student is a lazy genius who just popped out a polished research paper. I?m thinking . . . well, you know what I?m thinking.

Sigh.

I?ll have to deal with that on Thursday.

But today? It?s nothing but walk, cough, clean, cough, rest, cough, read, cough. With a few more coughs thrown in for good measure.

Hey. Got any favorite cough elixirs? Do share?I?m open to all suggestions except things like, you know, cat urine?I?m generally quite open to alternative healing methods, but I draw the line at cat urine.

Thanks.

got 2 cents?

Make yourself a grog: Hot water, rhum, lemon and honey. It might not fix anything, but you'll feel no pain. Oh and the paper? Google parts of it. Apparently there are tons of papers on the internet that people just copy - A friend who's a teacher caught out several people that way over the years.

hmm.. but it accepted that llast comment so let's have another go, shall we? I just wanted to say that these are absolutely breathtaking and fill me with such an incredible longing to return to Soliden that it actually aches just beneath my breastbone. I can't believe it's been a month already since Otter and I visited, and yet it's hard to believe that it hasn't been at leeast a year. So close and so far away. But these pictures help sooth the ache... especially the second from the top. I love the rosy reflection on the lake surface. Like a pink princess perch. i half expect to see Flamin June arise from that sweet niche, rubbing her eyes and yawning.

oh sick one...I feel your pain. I agree on the lemon grog - though silly me, I hadn't been adding rum...duh! Tons of Vitamin C do it for me, the little packets of Emergen-C, powdered vitamins that go in a glass of water, I drink one every morning and I take Super Lysine (actual product name) which is a super immune booster too. I dunno, other than that...you might want to try laying off the meth. ...oh, such lame jokes! shame on me! Lovely photos - I almost don't feel sad to have left New England for the Southwest as our sunsets are like this every night, though the terrain and air quality is vastly different...be well BP.

I don't think this helps with the coughing but I find it helps to break up congestion in the chest or head: boil water, pour it in a bowl, grab a towel, put your face close to the steam with the towel over your head and breath deep. Pretty old-fashioned but it always helps me. Amazing images!

What a gorgeous sky! It looks like the one I woke up to this morning, which tinted everything pink. I'm so sorry you're feeling yukky. Last time I had a cough, I smoked a mullein and coltsfoot herbal mix. I know smoking is probably the last thing you want to do right now but it's one of the best ways to get the plant metabolites delivered directly to your respiratory tract. Like Misty, I've also heard that dark chocolate relieves coughs. Good luck!

I have a bad throat too! So glad we are in sync, well kind of...my throat craves vietnamese chicken broth with the herbs and ginger and all that (guessing there's not a viet takeaway at the end of your street/path/track maybe T could make you some?!) ...and do you have Berocca there? I suppose it's like Emergen C but with all the vitamins and it's a soluble fizzy one - my throat is addicted to it - I've had to ration myself to two a day. Oh, and pink-sunlit-reflection-on-water-oh-my-amazing...xxx

It is possible that sunrise could heal anything... my cure all is aloe vera juice - it tastes vile but there is so much fortifying goodness there. In fact a tablespoon or so in a Berocca creates quite the magic elixir.

I am sorry for your cold. I have one too and did not sleep at all last night. I think I also have a touch of the flu too as I am sweating non stop. My profs. tell us about the anti plagiarism tool called Turn It In and how wonderful it is to detect such problems. Apparently it is a very smart tool that profs love to use to bust their students. Not that i would ever plagiarise. Now I am off to class but I'd rather be sleeping..or viewing your beautiful view. Be well.

Bless it - I have no good cough remedies, but am taking notes from all listed above. I do like the Ricola cough drops - they don't taste all menthol-y, and I think they do help. The funny thing is that I have to say the name Ricola like they do on the commercial with the guys with the big horns - REEEEE-col-la, instead of Rih-co-la. Strange, I know. I think you should fix that student with your best steely glare and say, "Let's talk about your paper." And then let them fess up. Then, you can beat them with wet spaghetti noodles! :)

Oh dear... I'm sorry your under the weather. I have had that cough for almost a month, but getting better every day. If I would have heeded my grandma's advice I would be better by now. Raw honey with lemon and vinegar. Yep. And then hot tea with a good shot of whiskey and honey before bed. It always worked. Whiskey is never a bad thing. love to you...feel better...and good luck with that dilemma today...
