January 27, 2007 9:43 AM- you know who I am?

It just hit me-- I'm the bad boyfriend.

You know the one-- he comes on with the full-court press, showering you with attention and funny stories of all the crazy things he and his buddies used to do. You keep him at arm's length because you know, you know, he is only going to break your heart.

But then, he gives you a small book of poetry that he knows you love, or that Veronica lunchbox from an ebay auction cause he remembers you telling him about how you lost it in the 2nd grade or he scribbles a love note on your mirror in lipstick for you to find when you wake up-- and you're done for.

It's good for awhile, lots of little calls through the day-- long Sundays with coffee and a fat NY Times to devour, but pretty soon you notice he's showing up late for dates and looking scruffy---not in a good way. You leave messages. He doesn't call back. When you do get together, he seems distracted, no longer so focused on you.

You think, "what did I do?"

But it was never you. You, you are perfect.

It is him-- the bad, bad boyfriend who just gets all self-involved and starts taking you for granted.

Let's just hope the movie ends with him catching the cab you're driving away in.

got 2 cents?

And how you always call when we're feeling most down and raise us to those giddy heights again. :) We live for those moments!

You are so not the bad boyfriend. You are the eccentric aunt who whooshes into town from far away places bringing the best gifts, and stories; the one who lets us eat ice cream for dinner. The one with the huge laugh, the mischievous glint, the lovely smell. And then you're off again, and we think "I can't wait til she's back."

Now I want to know what you think you do that qualifies you...in other words, keep blogging on this! Do tell.

Hmm...Naw. I think Sheryl's got your number. Either that or you're the best friend from days of yore, who took the path less travelled (that we wish we'd taken ourselves), and who lets us live vicariously through her fascinating postcards and letters to us from exotic ports around the world, whenever they make their way to our mailboxes via camel, boat and plane...

Sheryl has got you pegged - and to further the metaphor (along with darling Tinker), you're the wonderful auntie who has love affairs in Italy, and leaves postcards scribbled in Italian (from your lover, of course) tucked into your books.

Yep, I'm with the eccentric aunt theory. The one you're always thrilled to see because she adds a spark of fun to the most boring day...

I have probably been the bad boyfriend, in fact I'm quite certain I have been, but not in the way you describe ... and despite comments to the contrary, I dedected a trace of bb-syndrome in you long ago ... It's not an alltogether bad thing.

You have to live something to have something to write about! :D Do not feel guilty! You (and your doggie pictures) are loved and not pressured.
