November 10, 2006 10:37 AM- better left unspoken

If you guys knew what I wasn?t doing every day you?d string me up by my toes. If you knew what I was doing every day you?d stab me in the eye with the pointy heel of your Manolo Blahnik.

It?s really a no win situation for me.

What I haven?t been doing is capturing the extraordinary sky each morning as I once did. Remember how I used to leap out of bed to rush outside and snap snap snap the pretty pictures? And now? I lift my lazy head up from the pillow each morning and take in a fat eyeball-full before dropping back onto the downy softness. I?ll mumble to T, ?oh my god, it?s gorgeous, look.? And he?ll take a gaze before mumbling something back to me like, ?ummm, beautiful.?

Criminal. I know! We?re criminals.

But the truth is, I can either live my life, or spend every minute recording it. They are two distinct activities and lately, I?ve been more absorbed in the former than the latter.

Yesterday is a perfect example of why you don?t want me to tell you what I?ve been doing. First, the weather was glory incarnate. Truly. Warm, soft air as if it were early August---Indian Summer, they call it.

I got up, took the dogs into the field, and spun around in my bathrobe shouting my gratitude to the universe (see what craziness develops when you have no neighbors?) before coming inside to make coffee. Brought a glass of this, coffee, and oatmeal (with Fage yogurt and dried cranberries in it and I don?t care if no one cares what I had for lunch I?m telling you what I had for breakfast) upstairs to my office where I logged onto the computer and did the surf/email/browse/blog thing we all know so well.

Workity work work.

(Which yesterday meant a few calls to artist agents, planning a trip to Boston for a play preview, planning a trip to NYC for an extravaganza of performing artists, writing a proposal for a joint project with the university, preparing for education committee meeting that?s happening today). All of which is to say, I love my job.

At 11 ish, the dogs jumped up from where they had been lounging at my feet. They know when it?s time to go for a walk. I had on a thin cotton t-shirt and gym shorts--it was that warm. We headed up the hiking trail. Full on sun in the forest created the most heavenly fragrance as we?d had a heavy rain the day before and the layers upon layers of damp leaves warmed by the sunshine and mixed with pine was a perfume I?d buy any day of the week.

We passed one rushing stream after another. These are genuine mountain streams coursing down toward the lake far below. I?m really not even going to try to describe the sparkling water, bright green moss, the rock formations, or the waterfalls?my words are just no match. Henry jumped into one pool right up to his neck. Yet another missed photo op.

We came back to the house. I made lunch and then jumped in the car to drive to town. Got new sneakers (okay, not so exciting, but I LOVE getting new sneakers), sent some packages out at the post office including a little care package for my sweet Tara who is having a rough go of it. (shhh, don?t tell her I sent her Mary Oliver's Owls and Other Fantasies). Dallied in the bookstore before heading up to the gym for a most excellent yoga class.

Drove home along the lake, stopping to pick up fresh fish from the fish man who comes down from Maine each Thursday.

Back at the ranch, T cooked up coconut shrimp, chicken satay with peanut sauc, and lo mein (I made miso soup) and we had our magical Thursday night Survivor dinner party.

After everyone was gone, T went down to his office to work (he?s a code monkey these days) and I took the dogs upstairs. We clambered into bed and that?s how I fell asleep--with my pups nestled in around me.

Tell, or don?t tell? You tell me.

got 2 cents?

Yes, do tell! So does this mean that the house construction is done? Are you really all finished? (Is that one of those things that can never be admitted or it will surely curse you to have to start fixing things?) My walk into work had that lovely smell of leaves mixed with the rain, but the added urban benefit of passing houses to combine that smell with lovely laundry detergent, and then someone's coffee (to cleanse the palate) and then cinnamon. It really is delightful.

Oh, please tell! It makes my boring days feel not so boring! Wake up: Dark. Go to work and work all day: Grey light. Go home, cook dinner: Dark. No wonder I was totally geeked over my new headlamp for running. Your days sound so much more interesting!

Oh, do tell. But be prepared for the insane jealousy that ensues. Although this time of year does portend the beautiful skies and clear air that makes Southern California worth it. I wake up every morning to an amazing view of the Sierra Nevadas that the kid and I enjoy while having coffee (me coffee, kid milk....although blood orange juice?? Yum!) I should take your cue and post a picture of it.

yes, absolutely tell. TELL ALL. But the thing that has me atremble is this paragraph: "But the truth is, I can either live my life, or spend every minute recording it. They are two distinct activities and lately, I?ve been more absorbed in the former than the latter." OHMIGOD! you totally read my mind!!! It's so very creepy that I sat down in front of my computer with the very intent of writing a post all about that very subject, but decided to turn here quickly before I did. i'm so astonished, my lower jaw is bouncing off my knee!

oh, how envious I am...to spin around outside, still in your bathrobe, thanking the universe...now, if I did that where I live, it would not go over well. But it would make for a great blog post...hmmm. nah, I wouldn't want to give my neighbors more to crow about, they are still confused as to who was giving out candy at our house on trick or treat night, our wigs really threw them. Enjoy your weekend and please do keep sharing your days with us.

Sounds like a fabulous day! I love the idea of living out in the "wilds" like that -- must be so beautiful. We're in the middle of such crazy rains in the NW now. We love rain, or we wouldn't live here. The only pain is wiping off the dogs' feet a million times a day!

Your good days make our days all the better. How could we ever not be happy for you, the magical Bluepoppy, who slogged through corporate hellaciousness and managed NOT to lose her soul? I'm sorry, but anyone who would begrudge you this goodness has a shriveled, blackened heart full of worms. Dead worms. So, spin on, and write about the goodness when you 'git a hankerin' to do so...

Well, you are sort of inspiring me. There will be envy but also vicarious enjoyment. So I'd say tell. You heighten my own aesthetic tendencies from a deep slumber, usually. And usually, that's a pretty good thing.
