April 11, 2006 11:14 AM- let's wrap it up, folks

The mold has set in.

I?m starting to feel a bit yeeky like old Miss Haversham.

It?s one thing to do an epic post all in a go (that?s to say all within 24-36 hours). It?s another thing altogether to let it drag out behind me, stuck to my shoe like a wad of crepe paper from the Enchantment under the Sea Dance.

Must end this now.

Must move on to share all the oh-so-scintillating details of my present day.

(Hah. I totally lie. Scintillation is in no way present).

(But this is good?a digression. Delay tactics. Hmm, what else can I put into parentheses?)

Damn. You know what it is? I don?t want to get all sincere and earnest and fucking schmaltzy again. I hate being schmaltzy. Even when I?m drunk, I?m never a schmaltzy drunk. No, in fact I used to be a mean and destructive drunk (yes, it was me who bashed in your mailbox and stole the street sign). I?ve progressed into becoming a very silly drunk?but I would still hit you if you went all schmaltz on me.

Clearly, I?m tormented by the intolerable level of schmaltz in recent posts. And so, I shall draw upon the clinical, highly analytical faculties of my Aquarius brain matter and relate a few details in order to close this thing out.

Saturday I had a class with Anahata Katkin. She is a goddess. An angelic shepherd. (I kept wanting to pinch her to make sure she was real?but I?m glad I was able to resist?she already thought I was loco because I couldn?t stop blowing kisses at her). She took us on a journey and I?m going to do all I can to never leave this good red road that she has put me on. But, to quote Forrest-Forrest Gump, that's all I have to say about that.

Liz Elayne was in this class with me. Some of you have seen pictures of Liz and think you know how bright her smile is. You are wrong. You cannot imagine how bright her smile is unless you are there next to her, on the beach in the rain and she is holding your arm while you lose your shit. Her smile comes up from the molten center of the earth and passes you en route to its home in the sun.

Right after my Saturday class ended, I had a rendez-vous with Janeen. Yes, the angel who kept me from ruining this trip. She drove all the way out to Port Townsend to meet with me! And I didn?t even have any coffee to offer her. Or chocolates. No coffee. No chocolates. (Nina, baby?I promise next time I will bring chocolate and coffee--promise!) We sat in the lobby of my dorm and stared out at the sea as we talked and talked and talked as if we?d met somewhere before. Talk about a woman with many, many layers?she is a very cool, very mysterious woman with a mind that makes me feel like I should just keep the conversation on things I know something about, like Elmer?s glue and popcorn.

While we were sitting there, two bald eagles floated on by. Right before us. Right over our heads. Leisurely as if to make sure we saw them. I kid you not. Two bald eagles.

It was that kind of a trip. Everywhere I turned there was magic and beauty and kindness from people I?ve known for lifetimes but had never met.

How on earth do you recount all that?

UPDATED to add: it will never be over. No. Never. Because I am totally holding out on you people-- I haven't told you about vendor night, or as I like to call it, NIGHT-OF-FANTASY-OVERLOAD, otherwise known as TURN-THAT-CREDIT-CARD-INTO-CINDERS night. And it was during vendor night that a cool (like really cool she had just come back from the SXSW music scene) chica named Kristy had brought her ipod with her just in case we ran into each other again cause we had met the first night and she told me about this musician named Magnet and wanted to turn me on to him and then we crossed paths at vendor night and she whipped out her ipod and we ran to a corner like two kids about to snort glue or epoxy or aerosol or whatever it is kids snort these days and she played song after song for me as I danced around with the earplug cords dangling between us.

AND I ALMOST DIDN'T TELL YOU.

You, all you music fiends (yes, I'm looking at you Lizardek) there is something SO good out there and I didn't share. Now go-- go partake of the Magnet man.

got 2 cents?

Janeen says:
Aw, shucks. You did bring me maple syrup, though, and that ain't shabby at all, my dear. I've been trying to find a way to write about our meeting, but felt like any attempt on my part to sum it up would just ruin how perfect it was. You've done much better than I could. Except that I am not the least bit mysterious. It was pure joy to meet you; that is the best I can do (sorry for the schmaltz, but there it is).

Oh, a literary reference! Miss Haversham is so very strange - like a moldy, witchy, bride that never was. So sad. I hope you really aren't feeling this way!

So glad to find your blog! I've been seeing your name about, likely in Liz Elayne's blog, so I was happy to see you'd been to mine, too! I love your writing and humor and silly vocabulary (yeeky! I'm going to use that!), and your descriptions of Artfest -- I wish even more now that I had gone! I'll be back to explore you site more!

We all know that you are schmaltzy - we've been knowing it a long, long time. Giving someone a bloody nose or slealing children's candy will not, cannot ruin your lovely image for us, My Plum. The proving case in point: blowing kisses to your beloved Anahata Katlin. I'm basking in the glow of your experiences - and have determined in my own heart to also become a person who can speak eloquently on topics other than "elmers glue and popcorn."

Oh! Not to be too schmaltzy (*as I duck to avoid being hit*) but I really do love your descriptions. They are truly beautiful! Your trip really sounds magical on every level and I've loved reading about it. What a perfect ending... bald eagles! How exciting! I really do admire your courage too, flying all the way across the country to meet with an entirely new group of people. Very inspirational. As always, thanks so much for sharing!

So were you able to sleep the other mornings? This sounds so cool. (And I'm so tempted to find a summer camp for adults now...)

Thank you for taking me back and turning me on to Liz and her gorgeous photos of your altars on the beach. Ooooh, you had so much more energy at the end of the day than I did. Next year I will build an altar on the first day to consecrate the event. And take a photo of it too for my journal.

Sometimes schmaltz is the only way to go. Not all the time, mind you, but sometimes. So schmaltz away dear one, I promise I won't tell.

hi elizabeth! thanks for your comment on my blog! I'll be reading more of your artfest experiences - I was really impressed by Annahata's stuff on Vendor Night (I was helping Celine Navarro, who's booth was next to hers). Her work is amazingly beautiful. I would have liked to see some of the work from the class. Did you post any photos? -Melissa
