March 17, 2006 10:09 AM- lucky is as lucky does

As a kid, whenever something went wrong (most often it was the car running out of gas/breaking down on the side of the road) my mom would always say, ?aren?t we lucky?? And then point out how close we were to the next gas station, or how we had a spare tire in the car, or how the tow truck arrived in less than an hour, or how we got off the road before anyone hit us, etc.

Aren?t we lucky?

I recently realized I say this all the time, too, and always have. Like back when we slept in a room so small it only had space for the bed* I?d always snuggle up behind T and whisper, ?we are so lucky.? And then point out that we were healthy, in love, free from ?the man,? able to wear slippers to the post office, had a freezer full of popsicles, etc.

Even in crisis this phrase is always the first off my lips.

When our house caught on fire and we lost everything I stood in the driveway with our charred bits around us, breathing through my sleeve because the smell was awful and said, ?we are so lucky. The dogs were outside. All the windows were closed so it was contained to the first floor. All we lost was stuff.? That?s how I truly felt ? it was a miracle that the windows were all closed because it was summer?and a miracle that the dogs were outside because they would normally have been sleeping under the kitchen table.

A couple of years before the fire, in the South of France, our rental car was broken into and all of our stuff stolen (not just bags, journals, etc, but passport, driver?s license, checkbook, plane tickets. . .). It was the first day of our trip and we had just driven 8 hours straight down from Paris in a steady gray rain. When we finally hit sunshine, we stopped by the sparkling Mediterranean Sea to eat a picnic lunch on the beach and plan out how we would meander through the region for the next two weeks.

Shattered glass surrounded our car that was empty of all our belongings. What did I say?

?We?re so lucky.? Because T had his wallet in his pocket so we had some cash, and his drivers?s license. Because no one was hurt. Because I speak French and we could manage our way through.**

So yesterday, as my morning walk with the dogs was coming to a close and the house was in view, Henry leapt off the path into the woods for a final round of dash-and-chase with Ollie. It?s a game they play all the time at top speed. It?s a game that makes me laugh out loud as they do the funniest shit?especially Henry with incredible feints and dodges.

Except yesterday Henry stopped with a loud yelp. He?d stabbed himself on a sharp branch.

He?s on anti-biotics and restricted movement for the next 10 days. Poor guy was definitely in pain last night; it?s gotta hurt.

And yeah, we?re lucky. It wasn?t his eye.

Thanks mom, you gave me an extraordinary gift and it helps me through this life.

*Years and years later when we renovated the house people would come into this space that had been our bedroom for five years and say with absolute disbelief, ?you slept in here? And there was a bed??

**Although let it be said, when we stopped for food on the long drive back to Paris that same day, I insisted we eat at a Burger King cause Fuck the French the Fucking Thieves!

ON ANOTHER NOTE:
I can't believe I have to explain a reference-- it bothers me so much that the new banner is probably short-lived, but the lyric "catch the blue train all the way to Kokomo" is from Robbie Robertson's song "Somewhere Down the Crazy River." (If you don't know it-- you're missing out on some fantastic sex). Although the Beach Boys do have a song called Kokomo, this lyric DOES NOT refer to that little ditty. Grr. Last night T brought my attention to the possibility of people not knowing which song I mean. Gah.

Hate. Explaining. References.

got 2 cents?

Oh, Henry, why do you hate money so much? Or rather, why do you like to spend it so much at the vet? It would be more fun to spend it on chewies. And you know that Burger King is secretly British, because, ya know, we don't have a monarchy here in the ol' USA. So it was a double pisser on the French. Heh.

Yeee-ouch! I can SEE the hurt in Henry's eyes. Poor butterscotch baby. I'm so glad he's mostly okay, and yes, thankful it wasn't his eyeball that caught the sharp stick! And though I don't know the song you are referring to, but will track down because Lord knows I don't want to miss out on any sex!, it still made me smile because as a burgeoning adolescent, I thought the Beach Boys' song Kokomo was the most romantic song in the world. I wrote out scenarios that mostly featured me dancing on the beach with a handsome boy to that song. And for that, I will always love it.

I got the reference, I got it! I love that song. I love that one of the BoDeans (forget which one) sings back up on it, too. More importantly, that's a lovely story about your mother. No matter how much they drive us crazy, they always give us so much as well.

As the number one biggest crazy beach boys fan on the planet, I even knew it didn't relate to them, but who cares when that gorgeous puppy is hurting. Kiss him often as I know you will and be a good nursemaid to him. Poor sweetie. Your mom sounds amazing. We have a similar quote that our problems stem from our blessings. You just rock, bp!

that's seriously glass half full mentality ...something we could all use a little more tapping into. I'm too much of a glass half empty girl (hate that) and henry? he could really use a careerbuilder "monkey mail" right about now!!! ;)

I'm going to practice that kind of thinking - it's like chicken soup for the soul, but practical and wise, not cheeseball or hokey. And, oh, but the extra loving my dog is going to get this weekend. So sorry to see Henry hurt. I hope he is back to romping soon.

And I was feeling so smug because of course I know the Beach Boys and no, I don't know the real reference. Now I'm - what's the opposite of smug? Poor Henry!! His face just breaks my heart! But aren't you lucky. This is a great story of spirit. I love it.

Poor Henry boy. Thank you for the story E, it was beautiful. I tend to be a bit on the positive side as well, also thanks to my mother. It is amazing the things mothers leave behind even if they aren't very far away.

POOR Henry...he DOES look to be quite miserable! I remember when Rudy, while chasing a ball, stabbed herself on a helicopter part, while we were having a party in my Father in law's hanger...a long story...but I can still remember THE HOLE! *shivers. I love the cheery new banner, and aren't you "lucky" that you are such a talent!!

Ah, so you do the "lucky" thing too, do you? I've done it for years now, but I probably developed the habit in reaction to my mother's negativity. I needed something to counteract it, and whereas she often thinks darn, things could be so much better, I tend to think, heck, they could be soooo much worse - aren't we lucky?? I haven't checked in for a wee while and was horrified to see poor Henry's injury. He looks as though he's bearing it with fortitude though! What a brave wee soul. I'm having a LOVELY time right now reading your pages. They're tremendously inspiring you know!
