February 21, 2006 8:10 PM- the kitchen sink is in there, too

Tis a far far better thing to post daily than to try and jam two (okay three, stop counting) days into one missive.

William Shakespeare said that. And right he was.

The question is, how much can you take in one post? If the answer is not so much, I suggest you move along and come back when I'm back to my dribbles mode. Right now? I would put this in the category of too much.

Is this the inevitable result of arriving at AWW6 (that's Artist's Way, Week Six, for those of you playing at home)? What else could be causing all this emotional/creative upheaval?

Oh true-- I hear you-- living on the side of a mountain miles from civilization while T eats oysters on a beach in South Carolina could be rather isolating. But still, I blame it on AW.

I am all over the map. All over the map.

Saturday I spent the day with three cds playing over and over: Jill Scott, Beautiful Human; Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine; and Katie Melua, Piece by Piece*.

*How pray tell did I come by a cd that isn't yet released in the States? That would be due to the fact that some exquisite creature somewhere thought to spoil me.

With this in the background, I sprawled on the sofa and read Mary Gaitskill's Veronica. And now-- I want to tell you all about it how the combination was like a pill offered by Jefferson Airplane to shoot me down the rabbit hole, but I can't. I can't tell you anything about it. I got one lame opine up and froze.

That's what blocked me from posting for days when that was only Saturday and so much more was going on in this big crazy house where I was all alone with my two dogs for four days (except for the coyote that howled for about 40 minutes RIGHT OUTSIDE MY WINDOW and drove the dogs nuts).

On the phone with T who is poolside in Florida (enjoying a rum drink no doubt)

Me: Listen! Did you hear that? It's right outside the window?

T: Are you sure it isn't an owl?

I guess coyote howls sound like owl hoots when transferred through cellular phone lines across hundreds of miles.

On one of my artist dates I found this old jelly cupboard.

I planned to paint it then decoupage the inner panels and bring it up here to my studio where I would use it to house paints, journals, books, etc. The plan was to do all that oh about five weekends ago.

Ah yes-- And so that sad little jelly cupboard sat and sat and sat and sat until it could sit no more.

Hey-- no criticism please. Priming that cupboard is a major achievement. The paint and decoupage will surely follow. Hell. I feel certain it will be done by September. (But don't quote me on that).

And then of course there was Henry. Ever the source of joy. Here he is as you all know him, ever on the lookout for food:

But have you ever met King Henry his royal highness?

(Ollie is in the background saying something like, "this pose? this is my I'm-a-dead-possum-take-that-camera-and-shove-it, bitch-pose. Wake me up when you're ready to take us outside and go for a good 3-hour walk.")

Surely you've seen Henry "Hugh" Hefner in his come hither pose?

Of course, no photo shoot with Henry would be complete without something entirely new that even I've never seen. Behold Henry the Easter Bunny.

Oh god this has gone on too long and I haven't even gotten us to Monday. Bullocks. Let's just say all that trouble I was having last December with the weeping and the gnashing of teeth has been settled for now. I got a big promotion a couple of weeks ago which is great cause now my job is full-out playing with the varsity boys, but which totally sucks cause now I'm on the field up to my hairline in work and damn if that doesn't put a crimp in my bloggy life.

So to recap:
T is away.
I have kept the homefires burning and my mind expanding.
Henry cracks my shit up.
Work is amped.

Soliden rocks.

got 2 cents?

Perhaps Henry is working on his inner cat? My kitties sit like this too. It mystifies me! It does not look comfortable.

First of all, I'm glad the Heavyset White Guys finally figured out that you should be treated better -- although they're dumb as rocks not to notice that in the first place. The jelly cupboard is going to be amazing, and it's good that you're letting yourself take the time to really let your plan solidify before you do something irrevocable. All of your AW posts have got me walking past my copy thinking, Hmmn....and then somebody hits somebody else on the head with a soccer ball, and the cats throw up, and then I think, "maybe in the fall." Henry reminds me of the Cadbury commercial where all the animals try out to be the Cadbury Bunny. Perhaps he's auditioning so that he can contribute to the bottom line.

You know how to prioritize, that's what. Listening to music, reading, laughing with your dogs, writing when you feel like it, and kicking ass at work with a big promo. Good things!

Yay for amped work. Like the cupboard, love your dogs. I'm saving Veronica. I love Mary Gaitskill more than blue cheese on apple. God, those dogs are worth the price of admission. (That makes no sense but I just had to say it.)

I love that cupboard! I'm so happy about your promo, yay! Don't worry about those coyotes. They roam regularly around my parents house in AZ, they're harmless (unless those East coast coyotes are tougher-- probably are.)

Had to stop in to get a BP update and see some pics of my dogs. Nice to see them laying on the couch and not headed in the other direction through the woods. I'm just waking up here in Murrels Inlet, SC; headed out to Huntington Beach for a long walk before getting in the car again, headed for -yes- an oyster lunch, if they're in season around here; then Rocky Mount NC and the Babes in BilliardLand. Love you BP!

BP, I think you need to check into that "T" commenter. He sounds like he might be one of them crazy internet stalker types... There's a new cool book out from McSweeney's called Convergences that makes all these cool random associations between art and politics and current events. You might get a kick out of it. :) Your Soliden photo reminds me of one of the last essays about a cloud in CA in the 80s that is compared to a Man Ray painting, which is compared to Odalisque, and so much more.

Jam! I have been known to make jam and send it to well-deserving people! So you get that little cabinet ready and I'll send you some yummy Mississippi jam. Love the packed of good things post - and so HAPPY about your promotion. Wear your serious business boots and kick some ASS, I say. And here's hoping that Henry will keep you safe, even if he is busy impersonating a rabbit and a cat.
