November 09, 2005 7:39 AM- jolie laide

In homage to la Dauphine who has done a series on "jolie laide," I offer up my own version: the jobsite. For who could fail to find the beauty in such ugliness?

Well, perhaps the dogs could seeing as they are shoved in a corner with stacks of flooring above and a refrigerator next to them. That's right, the refrigerator is currently in the living room, naturellement.

But Henry, we all know his high standards, has nothing but disdain for his current living situation.

And in his defense, I must say, the fact that I haven't even cleaned out his eyes is statement enough of his wretchedness--- where's Dickens when you need some documentation?

Or, perhaps it is the sight of the unfinished interior that has Henry's eyes filling with gunk. It's possible.

But here's a true contrast for you: if I stand on the back porch and look left-- jolie! but if I turn my head and look right-- laide!

But you know I'm only gonna leave you with the beautiful-- you know that by now. Except, sh*t!!! The carpenters and painters have just arrived and I am still in my bathrobe and need to use the bathroom which is where they all are .. SH*T! See-- this is why I never post in the morning.

got 2 cents?

Nothing ugly about anything in your environment. The scraps are a testament to home that is being created. Love the doggies. And the pictures. So wonderful to see the progress and read your words each day!

A LOFT! You have a LOFT, too! My god, next you'll be letting it slip that you have a sunken living room. Or a hot tub that seats 10...or oh, I don't know...just about everything I ever wanted in a home. I love that last photo.

um, lizardek, darling? there is a sunken living room/sunken dining room--- and, it's not truly a loft--- it's a cathedral ceiling-- I'll take better pics of it . . . but , you wouldn't expect less from your namesake, Soliden, now would you?

Oh, Henry steals my heart. And would you think I was strange if I told you that Itake a distinct, perverse pleasure in cleaning gunk out of animals' eyes? And a refrigerator in the wrong place inside is so much better than one on the front porch!

Your dogs have the most wonderful faces. I love how crinkly Henry's face is. And he's not criticizing his living conditions. Maybe he's just wondering if any of those things lying around are chewing material?

You make a good point about the unfinished being beautiful... both in the man-made structure and the tree in transition. But you did cheat a little bit by throwing in some cute dogs into some of the photo, didn't you?

Elizabeth! How weird: I was just on your site earlier, maybe around the time you left a comment on my site. I LOVE the photos of your dogs. And what a beautiful setting you live in! I'm sorry your day's been bad - sometimes you just have to give into the temptation to flame. It just hurts so good. Here's to tomorrow being better. Brooke

Ha!! I've been trying to explain the concept of 'jolie-laide' to The Missus for yonks. I'll point her in the direction of this post, and La Dauphine's, forthwith.
