January 18, 2005 7:12 PM- the cold and the luminous

How do you define cold? If I tell you -3 degrees Farenheit with a windchill that makes the water around your eyeballs freeze would you say 'cold'? It's all relative, of course, but let me say for the record that today was brutally cold and it happened to be the first day for the carpenters.

Can you guess which of the darling carpenters below complained of nipple chafing?

The answer? Both of them. Actually, ALL of them (including T, but don't let on that I shared that with you, 'k?) knew that terrible pain today. But they are professionals and the first board was married to the concrete-- otherwise known as the sill.

I couldn't make it 8 feet to my car without whimpering and those guys were out in it all day, WORKING. Please. If I ever complain here again about anything, please take a 2x4 and beam me. Okay?

And still, T brought home some amazing pics from the day. Not much more I can add to that.

got 2 cents?

Picture me thinking, minus 3, hey, that's not so bad, and then my sluggardly brain belatedly registering the "Fahrenheit" and my jaw going slack as my gentleman's bits ascend rapidly into my body in sympathy. Brbrbrbrbrrr.

Okay, so your life's *not* perfect. :) Would it help if I said that when I checked the temp where our land is in SoCol (I'm coining a new phrase here...screw SoHo...I'm goin' to sage-land and it shall be dubbed SoCol) that it was MINUS SEVEN?! Minus. MINUS. I start bundling up here when the temperature reaches 80 minus 10 = 70.

Here in northern Vermont it was -31 F yesterday. Yow!!! This (along with the apalling lack of ethnic food) is Vermont's only downside. But yeah, think of the difference beween 60 and 30 or the difference between 30 and zero and extrapolate...down....from zero. Yow. My car ('93 Honda Accord) starts at 30 below but not at 40 below. This is not the kind of information I want to know.

Twas viciously chilly here yesterday too. The kinda cold that frosts your eyelashes and makes your tiny nose hairs fuse together in ice protest when you dare to take a deep breath. I took the beast for a walk nonetheless, but it was a short one and I looked like little Randy from A Christmas Story, my arms sticking out on either side like the stiff limbs of a snowman. er.... snowperson.

those pix are fabulous by the way. And it seems Soiden produces balls of ink light which is convenient for the light healing, no?

I think most people would agree that the weather you describe is freezing COLD! I'll try not to complain about the cold here ever again. When is the expected completion date of the house?

It's warmer in Sweden?? IT'S WARMER IN SWEDEN?? Oh god-- no wonder there are no people here-- and Auntie M the house is due to be finished (or ready for us to move in) end of May. . . *god willing and the creeks don't rise*

Well, it was yesterday. Actually, it probably still is today, but it's raining, so my perspective on the whole matter sucks. By the way, and most importantly, what were these men doing to get their nipples chafed? Sandpaper goes on wood, not skin!

I am in awe of those carpenters, working in that cold! Here's a tip (no pun intended) for that chafing problem: get those round Band-Aids and apply where needed. A friend of mine used to be a model, and they used that trick to avoid nipples showing through the clothes.

bp says:
Yep-- Suzy I gave them the band-aid trick on Tuesday . .and Gale, it's cause it is so cold that their nipples harden and rub against their t-shirts under their flannel, under their sweatshirt, under their fleece, under their down jacket. It's that cold! But today, is slightly better . . . and sunny.

Re: warmer in Sweden. When I lived in Minnesota, it was usually much colder there than Norway, Juneau, and Anchorage. I hope it gets up to double-digit temps for you soon!

Watching Soliden take shape reminds me of a book called Hammer Nail Wood, about a guy who builds his own house. It's not a how-to, exactly, nor is it a memoir. Still, I envied him when I read it, and I feel the same way every time you post your beautiful pictures (you know I love the cold).
