May 08, 2004 9:18 PM- wanderings

There is just so much beauty everywhere--it's overwhelming. I could walk just one street for a week and not be able to take it all in. I've taken dozens and dozens of shots of doorways and windows because the doorways and windows of Santa Fe thrill me. (No worries, I won't deluge you with them--think I'm going to create a poster of them for myself, yeah-- someday-- that little project is, oh about, 847th on my to do list)

Last night, I went to the Georgia O'Keeffe museum where they have an exhibit running called, "Moments in Time"-- letters and photographs between Georgia and Maria Chabot.

The show was sensational. Georgia's handwriting is JOLTING! Truly. So powerful and somehow recognizable (though largely illegible) but wild and one-of-a-kind with lots of loops and swirls and almost mideval in a fantastic (like Tim Burton fantastic) calligraphy way. Yeah. I'm sure you can really see it from that description-- sorry, that's my best effort. But can I say WILD and POWERFUL and just intense--- and these were largely grocery lists etc she was writing.

The photos were great, too-- though my faves were the ones of her unposed-- when they were camping or just working around the ranch. I picked up two photos at the gift shop from this exhibit that I will frame and put into my office/studio in the new house-- she just rocks. But there was one of her where I SWEAR she looked just like the wicked witch of the west in the Wizard of Oz-- (I didn't buy that one).

(((One thing I just have to get off my chest-- I didn't get a good vibe from ol' Maria Chabot. She felt like one of those cling-on-make-herself-invaluable cretin barnacles that often latch on to the mighty talented. A terrible thing to say-- truly, especially since I have never met her and perhaps Georgia loved her (and any friend of Georgia's is a friend of mine) but really-- I'm sticking with my gut-- she gave me the sychophant vibe)))).

Today I walked for hours and miles--went clear up to Canyon Road and sashayed through the land of art galleries. Some were so wonderful they were like museums-- some were so snotty I had to be obnoxious and leave my coffee cup in their trash just to piss them off. (I would've peed-- but I thought the better of it . . ). I went up to the Garcia bookshop which was one of my fave haunts when I was last here-- then all the way down to Guadeloupe for more shopping.

Tonight I went to the Jean Cocteau cinema and saw "Goodbye Lenin" (I'll post about it in Opine).

Now I am back in my sweet, spacious casita and am going to go sit in the hottub and watch the sunset----ahhhhh.

Here's a great doorway I just couldn't capture, but maybe a sense of it will come through.

got 2 cents?

Whenever I travel I am always drawn to how doors and windows are presented and cared about. Thanks for sharing. Now completely off subject, I just had to share my appreciation towards you for introducing me to Julia Alvarez. Like, OH MY GOOD GOD! Went to the library picked up her book and am just so thankful for her and for you mentioning her and thankful for myself actually taking time out of my busy mommy world to forget the dishes and laundry and just sit with Julia. Maybe you didn't know what a gift you have given me, so I just had to say thanks. Thanks.

I LOVE your idea about putting doorway pictures into a collection...New Orleans would be another great city for that...But I digress... Just wanted to tell you how much I have enjoyed the pictures you've posted, they really capture the essence of the town! I once skipped out of a class I was attending for work in Albuquerque and drove to Sante Fe for the afternoon, just so I could go to the GOK museum. I fell in love with Sante Fe that afternoon. Thanks for reminding me of how beautiful it is.

Otter and Kat-- I wish you guys were here, too! We could sit and drink mojitos and bask in the sun and talk about poetry and reality tv--LOL. But really, it would be so cool if you both were here in the flesh---

Hey Blue! I have been out of the loop internet-wise for a few days, or I would have commented before. Your pics are lovely, and I'm glad you are having a good time, I was confused about Roy D. until the comments after that post, and love your posts, they make me smile! :)
