May 07, 2004 2:36 PM- the student tourist

This morning I went for a walk up above Paseo de Peralta because slow, gentle walks are all Roy D is allowing me (I've never been in an abusive relationship before and it SUCKS). It is another spectacular day with wide open blue sky and an absolute absence of humidity that makes my inner hairdresser weep with joy. Here's a view of the city from my itsy bitsy walk.

Lo and behold I came upon this plaque

which, as you may be able to read, says Santa Fe is the oldest captial in the United States. I never knew that. Good to know if I'm ever in a bar on a Trivia Contest night and short on money and need the $100 prize and the question is what is the oldest captial city in the U.S.?

Here are a other few things I've learned since leaving home two days ago:

EXPERIENCE: As I left the house Wednesday morning, I most uncharacteristically grabbed "Bad Business," the new Robert B. Parker. I have never read a RBP book before. This one was just delivered the day before to T from his brother as a birthday gift. (You might be thinking, "aha-- she took her husband's birthday gift, the lesson is that he is a sweet angel and she is wretched whore" but you would be wrong since that lesson is old news).
LESSON: RBP is an excellent choice for a long, 8-hour flight. And, Spenser SHOPS with Susan on Newbury Street. HE SHOPS!!! Willingly, supportively. Do you know what ammo this is? Do you have any idea?

EXPERIENCE: At the airport gate, a group of us sat quietly reading or gazing out the window as we waited to board the plane. Guy comes in, sits next to me and proceeds to have a cell phone conversation at full volume with his wife. As I had no ear plugs handy, I had absolutely no choice but to hear every detail of his conversation as did the rest of the people in, oh I don't know, about a 300 foot range.
LESSON: There need to be licenses for cell phone use. A test must be administered which would enforce proper cell phone etiquette. Violators of cell phone etiquette (or unlicensed cell phone users) could be ripped from limb to bloody limb by an angry mob with no consequence to any members of said angry mob.

EXPERIENCE: On my flight from O'Hare to Denver there was a group of about 15 young men, obviously a sports team or something, travelling together. They all wore jackets and ties and had longish hair. Several wore the coolest, most cutting-edge sunglasses and all were genetically off the charts in terms of good looks and quiet athletic prowess. I recognized them immediately as a band of brothers from a prep school-- all the hallmarks were there.
LESSON: Prep school boys will always get me hot. Thank the Goddess of Criminal Intent that at the time I was surrounded by them I was barely much older and had nothing but scorn for their preppy boy ways. Were I to work in a prep school environment today, I would give Mrs. Robinson such a run for her money she'd rip holes in those black stockings.

EXPERIENCE: If you are working out alot at the gym and keep upping your weights in some misguided attempt at achieving a body of tone, you may be visited by the nastiest boyfriend on the planet-- Roy D. His presence will not allow you to hike or walk or sit and your appetite will disappear from the desperate fear of having your lunch meet up with Roy D later in the day.
LESSON: The universe hates me. I was a terrible, cruel child and having my vacation ruined by Roy D is a most deserving set of events.

Hey, speaking of things I've seen about town-- I came upon this large building with a sign that said only, "Scottish Rite Temple." As the wife of a Scotsman, I demand to know-- what the hell is going on in there? Do you think I should wander in and check it out?

got 2 cents?

sounds like you are having a blast, and your comments make me laugh! unfortunately, sometimes I think I am one of those cell phone abusers. My only excuse is that my best friend in the world lives in NYC and I live in Mississippi. all your pictures are lovely. I will be in Albuquerque in June (also southern Utah) and cannot wait, because it is soo lovely. also hope Roy D hurries up and takes his stuff and leaves. he's been to see me too, and it was scary!
