May 04, 2004 12:00 PM- cacti and turquoise and sun, oh my!

Watch me now!

That song, from Dirty Dancing that goes, "watch me now, work work, work it now baby" I have NO idea what this song is called because it is not on the dirty dancing soundtrack (I know because I just checked) but it is looping in my head over and over and just that ONE bit.

You'd think I'd have "leaving on a jet plane" gently looping, but no. Perhaps because Peter, Paul & Mary (is that who sang that?) are singing about loss and loneliness and I'm shaking and grinding my ass through these corridors in expectation, baby! That's right. Tomrorrow, 7 am I am on a flight to Santa Fe, NM.

Six days of puh-puh-puh pleasure. Well, not exactly THAT kind of pleasure since T will be home painting the roof, putting in a new bathroom on the second floor, cleaning out the barn, and taking care of the wildebeasts (someone's gotta get the house ready for sale . .)

I will admit to a wee bit of apprehension. Santa Fe, after all, has a lot to live up to. The summer I spent there (12 years ago--JESUS I'm so old Mary Magdalene and I used to work the same corner) was a fabulous, fabulous summer of my life where I was having SUCH a good time with so many young hotties to go drinking with that T put his sweet-never-wants-to leave-New England-ass on a plane and came out and proposed to me. Yep, in the land of enchantment. On one knee. Well, no, I'm lying. We were in bed-- but I made him do it for real and so he did, but no, he wasn't on his knee and we were in an indian restaurant and I spilled something orangey all over my white shirt. Yeah, I'm really sexy and coordinated that way. Another girl might have spilled a big glass of water on her chest-- giving the man some wet t-shirt to enjoy. Me, looks like I upchucked chicken masala.

But wait. How much could it have changed? Will there be a Wal-mart in the plaza? A starbucks in the Georgia O'Keeffee museum gift shop? Please, please-- let it be the same. Let it be perfect. Can I tell you how badly I am craving fresh green chiles? Oh my god. (Sigh) Another few hours to wrap up in this freakin' corporate forest of green carpet and green cubicles before I am on my way to low-slung, peachy adobe buildings with handpainted tiles, and blue, blue sky. Oh yes-- can you hear the song now?

got 2 cents?

Please, oh, please tell us that you're taking your laptop and we'll receive updates from the land of Georgia O'Keefe and green chiles and upchucked chicken masala, through which we can live vicariously...(I don't want to spend the next 6 days rocking in the corner...no pressure, really...I'll be fine *tic* don't worry about me *minor tremor* just fine...)

O...have a fabulous time but know I will miss you desperately (you have no idea!) although this may provide the opportune time to do a little break and enter and get my hands on that amazing easel. And also... jack proposed to me via a certified Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes offer with "will you marry me?" in a bubble protruding from the big beaming head of Ed McMahon. But he presented it to me on bended knee and gave me a big ass bottle of wine, so it was all good.

Michael says:
The song you are thinking of is "Twist and Shout," first done by the Isley Brothers and then covered by the Beatles. And Peter, Paul and Mary did indeed sing "Leavin' on a Jet Plane."
