December 02, 2004 2:08 PM- merrily, merrily, merrily . . .
This afternoon I had a good thought. Well, truthfully? It was this morning as I planned my escape to lunch which I usually start planning oh, about 9:30-ish give or take.
My idea was that I would go to the cozy diner (some of you know I have a thing for diners) where I could eat, get warm, drink several cups of tepid not-so-great coffee, sit in a booth and work on the very close to the end scene of the play I am writing (oh yes, I am so so so close and it will have a reading in February or sooner--more details to follow). Of course, as soon as I had this idea I wanted to leave the building. But I didn't. I am a professional, after all.
But when the Flintstone whistle blew the noon hour-- I bolted. And it was so perfect--there was even a clock on the wall facing me so I could relax as I worked and not worry about the time (no, I never wear a watch).
But even better still was the waitress. Have you seen Scrooged with Bill Murray? Do you remember the cab driver? THAT was my waitress. Except for the newsboy cap-- she wasn't wearing one of those. But the dark circles under the eyes? The skin tone? The throaty, barrel-chested voice from a lifetime of smoking unfiltered Camels. The laugh? The laugh! That was my waitress. And she had this conversation going on with a guy seated at the counter:
Her: Did you see Mystic River?
Him: Ya.
Her: Whatdja think?
Him: Eh.
Her: Overwritten. Over acted, I thought. Except for Sean Penn. He's fantastic. But really, a disappointment. Like Cold Mountain. Oh, that was a waste of time. I like a good movie. I do. More coffee?
Him: Ya.
Her: We watched Mystic River last night. What a waste. I was so disappointed. Why did people say it was good? It wasn't good. I like a good movie. I do. Now Spiderman. That's a good movie. Course it would've been better if they hadn't made it into a love story. I want a good movie. Why are there no good movies? Oh and I saw that horrible one with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett.
Him: Jim Carrey.
Her: Yeah. I know he's talented. I'm sure he's talented. But he exhausts me. He's just too much, you know?
Him: Ya.
Her: You ready for some pudding?
Him: Ya.
Her: Grapenut or tapioca? You want tapioca.
Him: Ya.
I would say that this was likely the highlight of my day-- because any combo of writing and diners generally puts me deep into the comfort zone but it may not be since tonight is SURVIVOR and my girl Twyla turned the game on its head last week. Can't wait to see what Amy does tonight.
got 2 cents?

Croila says: Wow. That waitress was really toiling there, speaking to such a chatty man, wasn't she?! "Ya"!
The screenplay sounds dead exciting - I hope you post more on this!
All the best
Croila :-)
PS: Still going to email you, but haven't had any time at home to get on the computer yet. Will do my best though :-) posted on: December 03

merrily says: Well. Last week was awesome. But now I hate Twyla. In fact it's gotten to the stage in the game where I hate them all. So I don't have favorites but I have order in which I would want them voted off-- so winner preferences by default. Scout-- OUT she is first to go-- then Twyla, Chris-- which leaves Julie and Eliza which blows my mind. Jenna Redux--- !!! posted on: December 03

wee says: O! that's just priceless. especially the bit about the tapioca. Although personally, tapioca makes me want to barf. The texture, Ewww. shiver. I'm having such a hard time getting into this season of survivor. To be honest, I haven't watched the last three episodes. Do you hate me? posted on: December 03

meg says: How funny and how sweet. I wish I'd been there. I need to find a diner, but I haven't seen too many in Phoenix.
I used to like Twyla, but they are all getting on my nerves at this point. I think that is what happens everytime. You just get to know them TOO well. I sorta hope Chris wins, but I htink he'd have to get ammunity EVERY damn time for that to happen. But...if by some miracle, he makes it to the last two, I am so sure they would vote for him rather than one of those bitchy women. :)

Marilyn says: This story reminded me of the funky-ass diner-type place we had in a teensy town I lived in many years ago. In the summer, the owner would open all of the windows...and then stand behind the counter chatting us up...while wielding her fly swatter right next to our plates. posted on: December 03

melanie says: I love the cab driver from Scrooged! Isn't he someone quasi-famous? At first I thought it was Tom Waits but he plays the crazy guy in Dracula. Now I am thinking that it was the lead singer for The New York Dolls whose name escapes me. Either way, the both have that "hard rocking druggy lifestyle" face and voice. posted on: December 03
